Rugby side in control
Ciitheroc RUFC 47 Upper Wharfcdale 3
IN the early stages of the game it looked as i f Clitheroe had at last come up against a side that would make them work for any honours. Wharfedale continually
ran the ball at the backs, won well in the loose and forced Clitheroe into one or two simple mistakes. But having settled down Clitheroe turned the tables and opened the scoring with a move that ended with winger Robin Lund scoring a very good try. Wharfedale’s pressure
seemed to lift Clitheroe’s jame and produced an mpressive drive in the set
pieces. The backs also made very good use of whatever balls came their way and their defensive work was much more encouraging. By the break, Clitheroe
led 20-3, but unfortunately they seemed to lose their aggresion and drive. How ever, another 27 points were added, in spite of a lack of organisation and method. Clitheroe looked the bet
ter side throughout the game, although they were made to work for their points. Acting captain Peter Wilson had a very steady game and scored two impressive tries. Other scorers were R. Lund (2), D. Fielding, P. Wilson (2), T. Lee, A. Rudd, A. Sweeney and R. Peacock. D. Routledge scored a penalty and con
verted four tries.
Clithcroc Ladies FC 2 Blackpool .Victoria 2.
IN THEIR NW Women’s League 2nd division match, Clitheroe made a poor start against Black pool Victoria, being two goals down at half time. Howe v e r , de spi t e injured centre forward C. Thomas having to be sub stituted, the team pulled themselves together extre mely iveil and equalised with goals from V. McLeod (captain) and E. Phelan. An excellent game by
goalkeeper K. Dewhurst helped to stop Blackpool from scoring again. A draw was a fair result.

M an a ge r Ray puts on sub's jersey
Clitheroe 0, Chorley Res 1.
NOT even a second-half appearance by Clitheroe manager Ray Hobson could waken his side in time to save a point on Saturday.
Ray, who last played for
Clitheroe some 12 years ago, came on as substitute against Chorley, another of his former teams. But, although he showed the younger players a thing or two, it was all in vain as another two points slipped away.
Visitors Chorley were a
very ordinary side with lit tle composure or individual brilliance, yet Clitheroe just never seemed to move into top gear, and take advantage.
After a fine start with
plenty of enthusiasm and r u n n i n g , m o s t o f Clitheroe’s players seemed to lose their appetite and Chorley held on for a com fortable victory.
Glen Wright, Wayne
Haddock and Steve Gray all had their moments in the first half, which saw Chorley take the lead slightly against the run of
;play, through a penalty. Their skipper Crawley scored from the spot after Clitheroe centre half John Lawson had c lum sily brought down Birchall.
For the rest o f the
Parkinson and T. Lee. Kick off 3 p.m., meet at Roefield 2-30.
Empress come out on top
EMPRESS Squash Club’s men’s first team travelled to St Anne’s for their latest game and came away with a very satisfying 4-1 win in what proved to be a highly competitive match.
Empress made a poor
s t a r t w i t h C o n o r McLaughlin experiencing a sticky patch in his current form, and consequently going down 3-1. The second match fea
tured Empress number four Colin Brennand. The game was a fine example of what gritty determina tion and a never-say-die attitude will achieve. He faced a very capable
touch player, who made intelligent use of angled shots and virtually drop ped anything short of a length, just above the tin. Against these tact ics, Colin employed a retriev ing game, hurrying his opponent into the inevit able errors which must come with touch play. The match went to five thril ling sets, with a tired Colin eventually emerging the 3- 2 victor. The following game also
turned out to be a fine match, with Niall Pollard eager for revenge over an opponent who had beaten him last season. Despite being 5-0 down

in the final set, Niall played a superb sliced drop volley shot, which rever sed his downward trend and gave him a renewed vigour and confidence to run out the 3-2 winner. • Captain Steve Hutchin son, back in excellent f o rm , a c h i e v e d an impressive 3-1 victory over a hard-hitting, enthusiastic opponent. The final match was
rather an anti-climax, as Empress number one Mike Heywo r th completely annihilated his opponent with some devastating squash to . win in straight sets with the loss of only three points. Empress 2nd team,
playing at home to Roch dale 2nd, also achieved a : fine 4-1 victory. In the opening game, the rallies
were ’ long and arduous, ■with the outcome being;
: decided by the players; ability to kill the ball. Dave Matthews’ opponent; .just had the .edge in this respect, and this/eventu- ally led to Dave’s 3-1 down fall.

Honour for Mike
EMPRE SS Squash Club’ s number one, Mike Heyworth, in his first year of eligibility fo r veteran tourna-
. men'ts, won the Lanca- . s h i r e V e t e r a n ’ s Amateur Champion ship at Preston last Friday.
Being a much improved
player since last season, it was no surprise when Wayne Townley gained a 3-1 victory with consistent and competent play. Playing at the number
three position, John Willis had a confidence boosting 3-1 win with some fine touch play, frequently deceiving his opponent with a mixture of lob and drop shots. Paul Lambert, currently hitting excellent form, had little difficult in thrashing his opponent to a 3-0 defeat. Strongly con testing for a place in the first team, Glen Evans won the final match 3-1, playing powerful, control led squash.
PINCH HITS 5
Hurst Green I, RSSC fi
A WEAKENED Hurst Green side offered little resistance to RSSC for
> whom Trevor Pinch scored five. RSSC’s player man ager- David Brown added another. Brown played after
recovering from a bruised and lacerated eye ball, received after an acciden tal collision with an oppo nent in last week’s game at Read. :v; Brown said the eye was very -sore and had been bandaged all week, v < Meanwhile, RSSC have sent a protest letter to the RibblevValley League
match Clitheroe ham mered away without suc cess at a rugged and deter mined .Chorley defence. The Shawbridge side,
containing newcomers Steve Walker and Brian Frost, managed to play quite reasonable football in their own half. But panic and misunderstanding took over once the Chorley pen alty area came in sight. And the calm build up, involving six or seven play ers, vanished as the team resorted to pumping balls down the centre of the pitch. Only sweeper Dave Hinksman had a satisfac
tory game, and his tackling and workrate were excel lent. One blackspot for Clitheroe was the booking of Gray for a second half
foul. Clitheroe: Ellis, Staines, G.
Walker, Lawson, Hinksman, Wright, Haddock, Frost, Gray, Worrall, S. Walker. Sub.:
Hobson. Referee: Mr P. Suter (Liver
pool).
RA Y HOBSON . . . came on as substitute.
Another home game
CLITHEROE will be at home fo r the second Saturday in succession this weekend when they entertain Leyland Motors in a rearranged fixture. The match should have been played on September 23rd but Clitheroe were involved in an FA Vase tie.
The Shawbridge side
should have had a free date on Saturday because they were due to visit Great Harwood Reserves. Since the season started, however, Harwood have folded. Meanwhile, Clitheroe’s
p la y ing strength has increased by the signing of Brian Frost and Steve Walker. Frost, a midfiel- d e r , and W a lk e r , a winger, both made their d e b u t s on S a tu rd a y a g a i n s t C h o r l e y Reserves. And skipper Dave Gil-
librand should be back on Saturday as Clitheroe bid to end a dismal run in which they have not won since September 2nd. Gil- librand has been sus pended for two matches.
