Youth leader Don has busy time ahead
AFTER b e i n g involved in all kinds of youth work in the Ribble Valley for the last six years, Billington’s Don King is set to become a fully qualified part-

of Pasturelands Drive, is waiting for someone to relieve him of the leader’s post at Gisburn Youth Club. Then he can concentrate
all his efforts on a 12-month course, at the end of which he hopes to receive his offi cial leader’s certificate. Don, a maintenance fitter

New Boots’ shop ‘asset to town’
THE conversion of the old car showrooms in Clitheroe centre into a shop for Boots, the chem ists, would be “a great asset to the town,” Coun. John Troop told members of the Ribble Valley Council’s Development Sub-Committee. Coun. Troop was proposing approval of Boots’
application to redevelop the Castle Street show rooms which have been empty for a few years. He said: “Boots should be congratulated on
suggesting a shop front which is very nicely in keeping with the town centre. I hope some of the other shops in Clitheroe will follow this lead.” ■ In a report to the committee, Chief Architect and Planning Officer Mr Charles Wilson said the company planned to replace the present showrooms with a building on a similar scale. There would be two storeys, the ground floor
being the shop and the first floor a stockroom and staff facilities. The main frontage of the building on Castle
Street would have two shop fronts in varnished hardwood with stained timber fascias and gold lettering. First-floor windows would be the wooden sliding sash type set in stone surrounds made from local limestone. The report said the development also included
the knocking down of various outbuildings behind the showrooms which would leave more car parking room for the Starkie Arms. The report added that Clitheroe Civic Society
generally welcomed- the scheme and no official objections had been received. The Sub-Committee approved the plan.

TOPICS UNDER DEBATE
th a t the rising tide of vandalism and crime among young people should be combatted by stronger discipline backed by corporal punishment in the home, school and courts. On another subject, it was
generally agreed that the flow of immigrants should be stemmed. C h a i rm a n Mr Tom
Boylan, of Whalley, thanked the president and members for their participation. The AGM is on March 17th.

He is also still hoping that a local doctor will offer to attend the jogging sessions e i th e r as a participant or just to keep an eye on the older athletes.
Said Mr Whittaker: “I feel that a jogging club is one way that villagers who do not take part in competi tive sport can make use of the playing fields we have recently acquired.”
