SUCCESS TURNS TO TRAGEDY
CHAMPAGNE success turned to tragedy for Gisbum trainer Tony Dickinson.
He was named Trainer of the Month by a panel of
leading racing journalists and commentators, and picked up the Pommery Champagne Award. Then came tragedy at
Sandown when Broncho II broke two legs and had to be destroyed.
The chaser, owned by
Frank Tyldesley, was the pride of the Dickinson stable. The horse broke a hind leg and a foreleg in

There will also be medals for the individual members of the w inning and r u n n e r -u p t e am s . Holders are Wadding ton FC Reserves. The questions have
been set by Chris Sims, East Lancashire indi vidual quiz master, and entries for this year’s competition are now being accepted. The fee is £1.50, teams compris ing six members and a reserve. The competition is

EMPRESS first team continued their rampage through Division Five of the Chancery North-West League with a resounding 4-1 home win against East Lancs 6th. Making his first team debut

Handsome win puts Waddington at the top
Feniscowles 2, Waddington 5.
WADDINGTON’S handsome win at Feniscowles’s expense gave the villagers the leadership of the Premier Division of Blackburn Combination, and continued their undefeated run.
However, that is not
the whole story for the villagers had to struggle to find their form on a swamp of a pitch. At one stage they were trailing 2-1.
Waddington opened confi-
d en t ly enough, Roger Walker giving them an early lead from a good pass by John Kirk. They then attempted the impossible . . . trying to play attractive football in the mud instead of playing the ball first time.

In the 28th minute John Nuttall and Dennis Underwood couldn’t make up their minds as to who should clear or collect a loose ball in front of goal, and Feniscowles pounced to put the ball into the net. Soon afterwards Nigel
Whiteside made a flying tackle more suited to a rugby field and Feniscowles converted the penalty. So, all of a sudden, Waddington

THE Ribble Valley League games weren’t the only victims of the weather at the weekend, for Clitheroe’s game w ith Nelson on Sunday was also washed out. The Shawbridge team has

SECOND SUCCESS
RUNNING for the Hyndbum Sch o o ls in th e Lancashire Schools cross-country champion- ships at Witton Park, Black burn, on Saturday, Michelle Wrathall became champion for th e second time, adding th4 senior title to the junior she had previously won. Michelle, of Langshaw Drive,

THE Ribble Valley League under-16 team lines up before the start of the - garne against Barrow. Back (from the left): Mike Phelan, Dave Roberts, Richard Patchett, David Burgess, Mark Jones and Neil Murphy. Front (from the left): Kevin Hayes, Ian Whittaker, Graham Lambert, Neville Roscoe, Alan Clarke and Wayne Rushforth.
Youth team ‘rusty* after lay-off
THE Ribble Valley side went out at the semi final stage of the Lanca shire under-16 inter league competition — but their exit was due to the recent bad weather, more than anything else. ., The backlog of matches in
the local leagues has meant that the players have had a lay-off and are somewhat “rusty.”
;ainly the
. case on Saturday at Shaw bridge, because the local lads had not had any real match practice for a number of weeks. " By contrast, the Barrow side had been making use of their town’s sports centre and it showed! After a very even first 40
minutes the visitors broke the deadlock and scored two goals in as many minutes. - Clearly spirits were low in the Ribble Valley dressing
room at the interval. But in the second half, things only got worse as Barrow made the game safe with another two-goal burst and a late success.
Barrow’s stamina — a
result of their indoor train ing — made all the differ ence. For on a heavy pitch an unfit team can expect to find the second half much more of a strain than the first 45 minutes. The visitors were undis-
putably a very strong outfit — they are selected from a much stronger league than the Ribble Valley.
But team manager Mr
John Woodworth was disap pointed, because he felt ms side hadn’t done themselves justice.
“The heavy conditions
favoured Barrow because they were a bigger and stronger team, but we never played anything like our best,” he said.
THE Clitheroe and District Scout A team scored a notable double over South Ribble when they won 5- 4 on Saturday. At the previous meeting in November the result was 14). It was an exciting game Waddington (R. FranHand),
played in appalling condi tions at New Longton, with a very wet pitch, driving rain and a gusty wind.
Playing with the wind in
the first half the Clitheroe boys suffered a setback in the first minute when South Ribble scored.
This gave the home side
confidence and it was some time before Clitheore came into the game. Midway through the naif two attacks
five the visitors the confi- ence they needed and a
good move ended with Blackledge shooting into the top corner. Blackburn also scored for Clitheroe and the teams turned round level at 2-
2. Having to face the wind
and the rain for the remain der of the game did not discourage Clitheroe, and Blackburn went on to complete a hat-trick.
South Ribble fought back
and scored a good goal but this served only to sjjur the Clitheroe lads to renewed
'efforts, and Blackledge scored their fifth goal. The home team’s fourth came right on time.
The District B team were
beaten 7-0. Credit must be given to all the boys who played that day for battling against such atrocious condi tions. Games scheduled for Sunday were cancelled.
Fixtures for Saturday:

all-important eaualiser was achieved. • The second half produced a different Waddington: they quickly took control and any hopes Feniscowles had of providing a shock result evaporated.
A joint move by Graham
Walker and Paul McGuire led to McGuire giving Waddington the lead, and very soon afterwards two more goals were scored in as many minutes.
Simon Whiteside made
nonsense of his earlier erra tic form as he ran on to beat the goalkeeper with a well

FIRST HOME GAME ENDS IN VICTORY
Clitheroe RUFC 4, Eccles RUFC 3
ECCLES came to the rescue when scheduled opponents Blackpool were unable to fulfill Clitheroe’s first home fixture on the new Pimlico Road ground. A most entertaining afternoon’s rugby was provided for players and spectators.

Dedicated volunteers make play possible
Hurst Green 5. Whallev Arms Celtic 3.
BY re-arranging their game for Sunday, Hurst Green and Celtic combined to beat the weather, but even so play was possible only because several volunteers forked the pitch during the morning. Both sides were below strength, D. Jacques being absent from the Hurst Green line-up, and R. Foster absent from Celtic’s. The villagers won the toss
and elected to defend the wettest end, playing up the slope. Celtic took an early
lead when Hallam, their prolific scoring centre forward, beat the offside trap and placed a good shot out of Young’s reach.
This jolted Hurst Green
and as the result of a good four-man move Wilkinson (F) put them level, but not for long. Celtic regained the lead following a wild clear ance which led to Tittering- ton having nothing to do but run the ball into an empty net. Just before the interval Hurst Green again levelled the scores, Wilkinson (R) scoring after the ’keeper had only partially blocked a shot.
As the pitch became badly
cut up, passing the ball became difficult, particu larly for the Celtic defence who were twice caught in possession in their own area. Greenhalgh and Nevins capitalised on the errors.
Appearances were that
Hurst Green had the game sewn up but Celtic hit back and Hallam turned in a centre from Pilling to make the score 4-3. However, Greenhalgh settled the issue by being first to the ball when Nevins’ cross stuck on the goal-line. Considering the condi
tions, both sides put up a good display. Hurst Green can feel pleased because their success takes them to within a point of Academi cals, the Division One leadGrs For Celtic, Hallam, Pilling

the points needed to gain the upper hand. But they did draw first blood in the way of a penalty, which was kicked by H. Crannah, their full back. As the game wore on
Clitheroe gained the upper hand in the scrums, but the
line-out still gave Eccles the ball. Clitheroe’s four points resulted from a try scored by Greatorex with some fine running by the club’s leading points scorer. The Eccles pack gave the Clitheroe scrum a trying
