Academicals took advan
tage of the strong wind at their backs to control much o f '
the first half. Mick O’Neill in the King’s Arm goal had to
make several good saves and, Peter Belton was unlucky to see a clever lob rebound off the post after beating the ’keeper.
King’s Arms were at their most, dangerous from set
pieces and Graham Owen had to pull off a good save from a Bob Peel header, following a comer.
’The Grammar School side
eventually took the lead only minutes from half time when Belton swept onto a loose ball to crash it into the top of the net. King’s, however, after wards claimed the goal should have been disallowed for a foul on O’Neill. The pub. team looked very
impressive immediately after the interval and pulled level in the 55th minute. Owen could only parry a well-struck free- kick and Rod Taylor was on
hand to score from close
range. . This goal stung Academi
cals into action and one of the busiest men on the field was
O’Neill,' w'ho saved w'ell from Belton and Les Birch. But he was finally beaten by Birch, who netted from a goalmouth scramble follownng a comer. King’s Arms came into the
game a little more and had a good chance of equalising
when John Waddington was adjudged to have fouled a
King’s player in the area. But Jim Connell did not hit his penalty hard enough and Owen had sufficient time to make a good save. The game was not a particu
larly good avertisement for local football and two players — Waddington for Academi cals and Ray Taylor for King’s — were booked by referee Norman Berry. The trophy was handed to
Academicals’ captain Peter Belton by Ribbie Valley League chairman Mr Neville Keighley.

Chatburn 7. Victoria 1
SHOWING noUung like the form which gave them a midweek victory- over Royal Oak, Chatbum made hard work of beating Victoria.
King gave them a good start with
an early goal but they laboured for the next half hour until King scored a second direct from a comer and Dobson added a third.
Chatbum shaped better in the
second half but still contrived to concede a penalty with which Dubow*ski opened Victoria’s account.
The villagers* subsequent goals
came quickly. Young scored from the spot, Bretherton from a narrow angle and King netted tw*o more to bring his contribution to four.
Victoria had few real chances.
Tomlin.«^>n and Humphries played well and goalkeeper ^ v ie s ijiade a good spot save from Malsbuiy. Chatbxim brought on Pratt in the second half for the injured Speak and he made several good ch^ces for the out-of>touch Riley.

HELD to a draw* at half time, HursU Green Reserves afterwards asserted their authority and swept to a comfortable victory. There was a fair amount .of
scrappy play at times, the home side buildmg up some go<^ moves which ended nowhere, while the defence swept up everything that Brockhall produced. ' Eventually, Masters crossed a good ball wiuch Jncoucs headed towards the far post where Wilkin

scoring through Masters and Young before Hughes found the target with a dipping shot-over the keeper’s head and injected more life into the villagers* play. badly and were a goal behind after only two minutes. West Bradford responded well to this “four-pointer” and took advantage of the defensive mistakes to take a three-goaJ lead by the interval. Calderstones staged a revival in
the early stages of the second half and once Foster had pulled a goal back they started to control the game. But soon after, Tittcrington was
given his marching orders for comp laining too strongly about a b ^ tackle from behind. This decision unsettled Calderstones and after West Bradford had scored their fourth, Ronnan was the second player to go after an admittedly bad foul. The visitors then took things easy
and only added one goal before the final whistle. Their scorers were Keighley (2), Bristol, Norman and Haj^reaves.

New spirit abroad at Shawbridge
CLITHEROE FC are back to their old tricks again. They have .spent months persuading everyone that
i they are among the worst teams in the' Lancashire Combination — only to come good towards the end of the season.
T h e i r 3 -1 w i n ove r
Morecambe Reserves last week e.xtendcfl their unbeaten run to five games and virtual ly ends their fears of having to apply for re-election to the Combination. With eight points from the
last five games, manager Mr Adam Blacklaw is confident
he has the nucleus of a team capable of making an impact on next season’s champion ship. “The lads are playing far
better now,” he said. “They are working for each other and the results are coming along nicely. If we can take a few points from our remaining games we \
v\W certainly stay
clear of the danger zone.”. I f Clitheroe can maintain
the form they showed at Morecambe, they arc certain to climb up'the table. From the moment Neil
Robinson shot them into a seventh minute lead, the re sult was never in doubt. Tre vor Fullard missed a penalty, but their second goal came
_soon after with a great shot from Tony Eyics.
• Eight minutes into the sec

Good start for athletes
TWO Clitheroe veterans excelled themselves in Sunday’s 24th annual ' Th ree 'Peaks Race, and ail the CTitheroe area contingent, put up better than Average performances. In the worst weather conditions in the history of the event, including
‘ strong -winds, hail and rain, the winner was Blackburn Harrier John Calvert, finishing in 2 hours 51 minutes .94 seconds. The second Qithcroe fclI-raccr homo was 43-ycar-old Mr Alistair.

.adverse weather. First Clitheroe man home was
Nicky Dinsdale, the only local runner taking part*who is* not >
