which begins at 1 p.m., is the football match between Clitheroe Ladies’ FC and Nabwood, a team from Bradford. T h e ma t c h wi l l be

demolished the rail and smashed the window of tele vision rental shop Tru-View, causing £600 worth of damage to televisions and stereo equipment.

Mr Terence Doughty,

chairman and director of the Great Harwood-based busi ness, told the 'Advertiser and Times: “There were several neai' misses in the week before this accident. I have asked the highways people to install a proper crash barrier on this bend.”

Mr Doughty added that

the present mard rail had been damaged many times in the three years that he has had the Clitheroe shop. “TTie rail is so flexible that we have been able to straighten it ourselves,” he said.

This was the first time his

shop had been damaged, although a vehicle once crashed through the rail and came to rest only two inches from the plate glass window.

Mr Peter Watson, who

runs the Clitheroe shop, said that accidents seemed to have been happening more frequently dunng the. past IS months. “They happen when people come round the comer tOT fast, especially when the road is wet,” he said.

i County Divisional High ways Surveyor Mr Cemic Kay commented this' week that the railing, which has now been removed, was designed to keep pedest rians off the road, rather than cars off the pavement. He promised, however, that the matter would be investi gated. -

Did not stop

FOR not stopping his ear at the junction of Railway View and Waddington Road, Charles Arthur De La Rue, o f H aw th o rn e P la ce , Clitheroe, was fined £15 at CTtheroe. In a letter admit ting the incident, he claimed it was purely a technical offence. The roads were clear and neither danger nor, inconvenience was caused to anyone.

MORE than 30 youngsters from this country and abroad will be doing volun tary work at local hospitals in the next few weeks, thanks to a scheme organ ised by Toe H. The first of three groups

of young people who are to help with the entertain

ment and education o f mentally handicapped chil dren have now completed their stay. Most of them have been at Calderstones Hospital and the remainder a t Hargreaves House, Oswaldtwistle. They rounded off their

visit with a tour of the R ib b le V a l ley Mayor’ s Parlour, where they were welcomed by the Mayor (Coun. E d w a r d Newhouse). A brief talk on the borough regalia was

given by Chief Executive O f f i c e r Mr Mi c h a e l

. Jackson. The project was the first

of its kind to be organised by the'Pendle and East Lancashire district of Toe H. Regional Field Officer Mr Alan Daniels, of Enner- dale Road, Clitheroe, is in charge of the operation. A r ra n g em en t s on the Calderstones side are being ma d e by Mr s P e n n y Walker, assistant volun teer liaison officer. The only overseas visitor

in the first batch of volun teers w ^ Dutch girl Edith Veldhuizen, who is seen here signing the Ribble Valley Mayor’ s visitors’ book. With her are the Mayor and Mayoress and, on the Mayor’s right, Mrs Walker.

ROEFIELD BARN

MEETING

REPRESENTATIVES of local sports organisa tions have been invited to a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Roefield Bam project.

The meeting, at the

Window to be

stored

A STAINED glass window at Clitheroe cemeteiy chapel \vill be removed and stored in safety before the building is demolished, the Ribble Valley Council’s Finance and General Purposes Commit tee has heard. Members were- told that

the demolition can now go ahead, following the with drawal of an objection by a member of the public. The windows were donated in the 19th century by the Bullock family. Coun. Edwin Gretton

(West Bradford) said it seemed a pity that the window had to be stored away out of sight. But Chief Technical Officer Mr Dennis Black said the council was obliged to look after the window and it would be

difficult to arrange for it to be installed elsewhere. Mr Black added that it

might be possible to use some materials from the chapel on other building projects.

Victoria Hotel, starts at 7- 30. Letters have gone out from the Ribble Valley Sports and Recreational Advisory Council seeking opinions from sporting organisations and individu als about the bam.

It is stressed that, at the

moment, only sufficient money is available to restore the shell of the building. But the Advisory Council adds: “ It could serve as a common p r o j e c t f o r e v e r y o n e mterested in sport to work together.”

Points for special discus

sion at the meeting will be — the barn’s use; the help any local clubs will give; the means of financing the bam so that it will be self supporting; and how best to mn the building once the scheme is completed.

A feasibility study by

the Ribble Valley Ckiuncil’s planning staff shows the bam is not high enough for badminton.

But possible uses include

seating for 156 (with move- able chairs), three table tennis competition areas,

judo, bo.xing and fencing areas— and space for a small stage , bar, kitchen and toilets.

Such activities could not

all be accommodated at any one time, but several sports could be enjoyed on an inter changeable Imis.

CHOICE OF A C T m n E s A T SUMMER

WORKSHOP A. CHANCE to discover hidden talents is offered to people in the Ribble Valley at a three-day summer workshop being held at

Ribblesdale School next Monday to Wednesday. But talented or not, it

doesn’t matter, for the idea of the workshop, run by the JW Regional Arts Associa tion, is that people should enjoy themselves. The workshop — from 9

a.m. to 4 p.m. — is divided into sections fo r drama, music, visual arts and pottery. ^ Each day there will be a

different programme — in the music section, for inst ance, a creative session in the afternoon will be based on an opera studied in the morning. The drama section will

create ideas and themes which may or may not result in a performance. A fee of 20p towards costs

will be made each day and there is an extra charge of 20p for the pottery class to cover the cost of materials. The workshops will be led

by Brian McDonald, Mrs Joan R o s c o e , Graham Ma l l i n s o n ahd T o n y Cavender.

Within the budget

'THE Ribble Valley Coun cil’s expenditure on Silver Jubilee celebrations totalled £974, just £6 less, than the amount a l lo ca ted , the

F i n a n c e and Gener al Purposes Committee was told on Monday. The cash was spent on the

b e s t -d e c o ra te d village contest, a visit by a m i l i t^ band, a thanksgiving service at 'W^alley and the decora tion of civic buildings. A previous meeting of the

committee had heara that the council might have underspent, by a larger amount, said Chief E.xecu- tive- Officer Mr Michael Jackson in a report. Now that all the costs were known, this was not the case.

On course to seek

adventure

TWO local students ^vill be seeking adventure on a weekend sailing course at Windermere in September. Timothy Birtwistle, of

Maple Close, ^Vhalley, and A n t o n y Maw s o n , o f “ Oakleigh,” Barrow, both 17, will be attending the course organised by the La n c a shi r e Education Committee, at the Venture Forth Base. It includes dinghy sailing

instruction, a lake cruise and formation sailing. At present 'Kmothy is on a

three-week cruise on the Winston Churchill” and

Antony is with his brother Michael (15) in America on a Rotaiy-organised exchange scheme.
