start -in reply and the vast total they faced made them conclude that discretion was the better part of valour and that, while making as many runs as possible, they would be content with a draw. ' They lost Eddleston with the first ball of the innings. A ball from Newby deflected onto his head and rebounded, to be caught by Snape. Eddleston was taken to hospi tal for treatment, and his team took time to . recover from the setback. Woolley produced another

wicket did Clitheroe really show what could be done. Davies (scorer of a faultless
73 against Northern only seven days before), Duck worth, and Dixon were , out before the score passed 25." After some resistance from Gee and Monk for the fourth wicket, Jones stepped in to dismiss them and leave Clitheroe in desperate straits. Hope flickered briefly when
Boden joined Westhead and the pair embarkod on a death-, or-glory attempt to salvage their side's innings. A series of towering hits —
some away from the fielders, others dangerously near —
flowed from their bats. They won some glory before going to their deaths — both out in
quick succession after adding 48 in 34 minutes. Only Seedle, with 18 useful

never big enough to pose problems and with time in hand the visitors set about their job cautiously. Only at
Clitheroe’s score of L19 was
one stage in the innings did Clitheroe look in with a chance. Seedle captured a couple of quick wickets to bring the Northern score to 80
for 6. But these losses brought in

Bromley, the one Northern batsman with the “hit out„or g e t o u t" philosophy of Clitheroe’s Westhead and Boden. When he was out, caught by Monk at long on, he had virtually won the mutch by scoring 24 in 15 minutes, Clarke and Fox knocked up
the remaining 12 runs, leaving the home supporters just one moment to savour from the match. That was a superb running catch by Birch to dismiss Mansfield. The Northern pro skied the
ball towards .Birch in the deep. The fielder seemed to cover too much ground but, back-traeking just in time, caught the ball above his head and out of the sun. It was one of the most exciting catches seen at the ground for a long
