hearts or five diamonds, but at our table the bidding took a different turn. East opening the bidding with one spade, my partner bid five diamonds; pre-emptive, but showing nine tricks with diamonds as trumps, pass from west. I was now in a dilemma, but settled for si.\ diamonds which made for a top board. Pairs, who bid si.x hearts,

unaccountably went off, but seven hearts is lay down as the cards hay. The hand illus trates a good bidding rule — that is never pre-empt holding a four card major suit. A good ACOL sequence

RIBBLE VALLEY householders, who t^hould by now have received their electoral registration forms, are reminded that it is vitally important to fill in and return them as soon as possible. The information on the

Make certain of your vote

forms will be used to compile new electoral lists — and if your name is not on these you may not be entitled to vole in elections next year. Qualifying date for resi

dence is October 10th but it is not necessaiy to wait until then before returning the forms. In fact, the longer the delay the more likely it is that your name will he omitted from the 197G register. The electoral lists will be

published in late November, enabling electors to make sure their names will bo included in the Register of Electors to be published next February. Any householder who lias

not received a form should contact the Ribble Valley

Councirs Electoral Registra tion Section (Clitheroe 25111),

as should anyone wlio has any problem filling in the details. Inclusion on the register is,

of course, specially important for next year as there will be both borough and parish elec tions in May.

Barn switch turned down

PROPOSED conversion of a barn at Abbey Farm, Whal- loy, to a dwelling has been turned down by the Ribble Valley Council’s Development

Sub-Committee. 1’he commit tee heard in a report that the proposal was contrary to the

jiroper planning of the area and that sewerage facilities

were inadequate. Applicant was Mr W. Ormiston.

THE small, informal kind of nui’ses’ prizegiving, recently introduced in the Burnley health district, made a suc cessful debut at Calderstones

when IG pupil and student nurses received hospital cer tificates and badges on com pletion of their training.

District Nursing Officer

Miss B. Blackstock, making the presentations, told the nurses they should be proud of having trained at Calder- stoncs, which had a very enlightened approach to Uie care of the mentally hand icapped.

It was one of the largest

caring institutions in a large health district, and nurses should remember the import ance of the mutual depend ence between the caring and the institutional and siqjport services. Good communication of all kinds was vital.

Miss Blackstock also urged

the nurses to take the chance of further (lualifications, lo become bettor nurses.

She was thanked on behalf

of the nurses and their frieiul.s by Mrs Carole Cropper, who

also expressed the thanks of the prizewinners to the tuto

rial staff, the training ward and administrative staff, and the catering and gardening staff who had contributed to the occasion.

Mr Thomas Bradley, a stu-

dejit nurse, presented Miss Blackstock with a bouquet.

Among the j)rizewinners

were: Student nurses — Mr Thomas Bradley, Salthill Road, Clitheroe; and Mrs Rita Ho r n, Mi s s Swuber oon Mosany and Mr Peter War wick, of the Nurses Home, Calderstones.

Pupil nurses — Mrs Mary

M a r s d c n , We s t Vi e w , Clitheroe; Mr John Philip MeShee, Nurses Home, Cal- {ler.stonos; and Mi’s Hermione Striitynsky, Pasturelands Drive, Billington.
