Own goals shatter Rimington

UinmiKton 0, 11 in>l Greet) Tt

TWO own goals sank Iliming- ton in tlicir first division game against Hurst Green. A dour first period left

Rimington a goal down — but with the great advantage of playing downhill in the second

half. Hurst Green, however,

seized the initiative from the restart and Dowden hit two goals in rapid succession — the first a header and the second a full-blooded drive from close range. Although three down at this

stage, Rimington came back into the game with a flurry of useful attacks and looked cap able of pulling level. But Lwo tragic own goals —

a rebound off Graham and a wayward back pass from Johnson — sealed the game for Hurst Green. Rimington are already pro

ving something of a Jckyll and Hyde team, having scored eight goals in their two previ ous matches before suffering this crushing home defeat. Kiininston: Johnson (S). Johnson

division and with two good wins already under their belts, Academicals began in an aggressive mood and were five up by half-time. Birch opened the scoring

when he latched on tG a fine through ball, and Wright added the second with a fine solo effort. Wright, released by Black

burn Rovers only this sum mer, added two more before the interval, with Belton also contributing. Second half scorers for

Academicals were Compton, Hcskcth, Wright (2), Belton (2) and Fielding. Academieals have now

scored 27 goals against one in their three games, and are clearly a force to be reckoned with in the first division. Billington will not always

come up against such fast- attacking opponents, and

although they became rather dispirited in the second half, they can take heart from a game and sporting perform ance. A ca d em ic a ls : Fielding,

WHALLEY COAST

tVImlley J. Broclihall 1,

A HAT-TRICK by Whalley’s Roberts was enough to ensure

a comfortable victory against Brockhall in this second divi

sion match. For the first 15 minutos

Brockhall had most of the play but they could not turn their superiority into goals. Shutlleworth — in his first

game for Whalley — control led midfield superbly. Roberts struck first from the spot just before half time,

and lie continued in this vein after the interval to complete

his hat-trick. Brockhall rallied and Price

pulled one hack. But it was too late, and Whalley coasted to victory in a good-spirited

match. IVhaltey: Wullbunk, Whittaker,

BROTHERS ON TARGET

BROTHERS John and Robert Peel made this King’s Arms’ victory against Low Moor a strictly family affair. Robert shot his side into the

lead in the first half, and after the visitors had levelled the score, John hitanS2nd minute winner, in this first division

match. Robert’s goal was the high

light of an entertaining first half which saw King’s well on

top. A fte r the interval Pinch

went close beforo O’Neill, struck a fine cross shot to make it 1-1.

, This setback spurred King’s

into action and their constant pressure was finally rewarded when John grabbed his late winner. King's Arms: O’Neill, Blenkin-

Trinity keep unbeaten record

Spring Mill 2, Trinity YC 2.

DETERMINED second-half defensive tactics saw Trinity hold on to their unbeaten record in the Ribble Valley Football League’s second divi sion. After a bright start, Spring

Mill took the lead through Bradley. They were, how ever, denied further goals through good goaikeeping on the part of P. Devine. Trinity broke away twice shortly before the interval, with M. Devine and Humphreys giv ing the youth club side the lead. The second half saw Trinity

setting out their stall for a massed defence which Spring Mill managed to break only once, through Wood. It was one-way traffic towards the Trinity goal but the youth club side managed to hang on. Spring Mill: Brmvnknv, Gates,

Suprise goal

GrinHIcton 4, Culdcrstoncs 2.

CJ RIN I) L ETO N goalkeeper D. Parkinson was the surprise

scorer of his team’s third goal, when he hoofed an enormous goalkick straight into the Cal- dorstones net, in this second division match. From the outset both teams

put the accent on attack but neither could utilise their many chances. Grindleton finally took the lead when Turner crept in behind the Caldcrstones defence and nudged a glancing header into

the net. Pilling shot Culdorstonos

level from an acute angle, and the visitors took the lead when a speculative 30-yardcr from Kimberley deceived the keeper. Just IxToro half time Grindletmi

were back on level terms when 1 Inkl

ing managed to dribble through a ruck of players and score. After the interval Tony Powell began to get a grip on midfield and drove his team constantly forward. The surprise goal by Parkinson

put Grindleton ahead and Cowking added a fourth to sew up the match. Grlndlclon: Parkinson (D), Seed,

Under the captaincy of B i l l Workman, the time-

honoured blend of youth and experience certainly worked i t s wonders at Church Meadow.

Next year several o f the

younger players will be chal lenging for the first-team places, and this coupled with the early signing of Keith O l iv e r as p ro fe s s io n a l , should give the Wanderers’ supporters renewed cause for optimism.
