after the ball had rebounded against the cross bar from a free-kick and Masters added a second following a

Billington take a ^ hammering

Chipping 15, Uiiiington 1.

BILLINGTON FC look set to notch up a record in the Ribble Valley Football League — for the most goals against in one season. . And with 47 goals already in the

Billington net — 15 from Saturdays match with Chipping — the team is

well ahead of rivals Henthom with 27 against and Chipping with 21. But the Billington lads are not

losing through lack of determina tion. Indeed, on Saturday they put m a very spirited performance, and fully deserved their late consolation goal. Another factor against them

recording a victory is their team strength. Last week they could field only eight men. This weekend they managed one better. More support from team members might put the team in winning ways! Chipping pressed forward from

the start and scored freely and regu larly in the first half to go in with a > seven goal interval lead. The second half was a carbon copy

of the first, Chipping completely dominating the scoring, but not

always the run of play. Two members of the home sidc^ F.

Squires and Nuttall, almost scored double hat-tricks with five goals each, and new man Dinsdale netted one goal on his debut, when he came on as substitute. T. Squires scored from the pen

The old, old story of missed chances

Clitheroc 1, Bacup 3

YET another chapter was written on Sunday in Clitheroe’s all too familiar story of missed chances and defensive lapses costing dearly.

Once again they were by far

the better team, but, for the seventh successive game this season, they allowed the opposition to win by the occa sional breakaway. Clitheroe created enough

chances in the first half to have won by an overwhelming margin, but their shooting, as has been the case all season, was way off target. On several occasions the Bacup goal was wide open and it would have been far easier for the forwards to have scored. But the ball was fired wide, over, straight at defen ders — anywhere. but the back of the net. Clithcroe’s solitary goal

PINCH MAKES SURE

Clitheroe Reserves 3, Feniscowles 1

TWO goals from Trevor Pinch and one from Eddie Prccdy were enough to give Clitheroc an easy victory in (his Blackburn Combination premier division game.

■' With the wind behind thorn,

was, in fact, turned in by a Bacup defender. By the end of the game it became patently clear that this was the only way they could score. Bacup on the other hand

Chtheroe made good use of the long ball and came close with soveral early efforts. Drachenberg hit tho bar with a fine shot and the visiting keeper had to make a couple of good saves to keep his side m with a chance. The Reserves took the lead after

had three dangerous attacks, three chances and three goals. It was'as simple at that. Just why Clitheroe cannot,

win — they have lost eight of their nine matches this season — is difficult to assess. But much of the blame must lie with the forward line. With John Kirk, Tony

has improved with every game and, against Bacup, many of their players gave their best performance of tho

season. Tony Kyles and David Gillibrand

were tireless in midfield and were in control of this position for most of the game. Defenders Tommy Beard and Colin Monks were dangerous on the over-lap nnd gave the attack a div e rs ity it had been previously lacking. But still they were unable to con vert even the simplest of chances

into goals. Centre-half John Lawson, playing

in the number nine shirt, missed three chances in as many minutes in the first half — one from only six yards out. The other forwards were not

e n t ir e ly blameless either, for although they positioned themselves well, they too were unablo to score. Clitheroe did in fact take a short

lived lead after 25 minutes when Geoff Payton fired a hard, low cross along the line and a defender ran it into his own net. But a minute later Bacup equal

ised from their first attack through Illingworth after Clitheroe’s new ’keeper Eddie Smith failed to punch the ball clear. Clitheroe continued to push for

ward and wero denied a goal in the 35th minute by Bacup 'kcepor Walsh, who made two magnificent point-blank saves from Tommy Orrell and Eylcs. Graham Bisby was next to go close

when he saw a good effort headed over the bar by a defender. From the resulting comer David Crump scraped the bar with & header.

The Clilheroe supporters’ feeling

of frustration were summed up at half time by one old Bacup stalwart who observed: "It’s a good job they can't shoot or they’d bo 10 in front." The second half virtually followed

the same pattern as the first — except for Bacup scoring twice! Clithcroc: Smith, Beard, Eddies-
