IT’S birthday time in the Earnshaw house hold next week. Irene will be 20 on Tuesday and husband Stuart 21 three days later. But for the young. Scots couple, married two years ago, the celebrations are likely to be dark and dismal.

The reason? Mr and Mrs’

Earnshaw have been without electricity in their terraced home in Taylor S t re e t ,

: Clitheroe, since they moved in - nine weeks ago. Their.only means of lighting

• is an oil camping lamp which they carry from room to room. And when it’s time for bed, th e y don’t go u p s ta irs , because they feel the bedroom is damp without heating — they sleep downstairs on cush ions.

Rewiring The couple, who moved

from Scotland to Clitheroe a year ago, hope to settle here. They were living temporarily

with friends when they saw an advertisement in the Oxfam shop window for a rented house. Needless to say, they were delighted at the chance to set up their own homo.

. . I t was only when they

asked the Electricity.Board to check, the meter that their troubles began. As well as finding that it wag faulty, it appeared th at the house needed completely rewiring, and e le c tr ic ian s finally

removed the meter for safety. Mr and Mrs Earnshaw,

as such the house >vas not officially his. He thought that the coat of

restoring electricity would probably be about‘£150 and suggested the; couple should have the’work carried out t h e m s e l v e s . He a ls o suggested that they might like to look round for another house.. Speaking for the landlord —

Mr Kaslan Singh — his son — Mr Gurmail Singh — told the Advertiser and Times that his father had bought the house in T a y lo r S t r e e t f rom a Clitheroe woman for £400 about six months ago! I t was in a bad state of

Mr Gicndinning took the

He also deciphered an
