OLD-ESTABLISHED FIRM'S NEW LEASE OF LIFE

MAKING alterations is a routine task at any ladies’ outfitters. But at the long-established Clitheroe business of Grimshaw’s Ladies’ Wear, alterations of a rather important nature have Just been completed—to the shop

itself. And, say proprietors Mr

John Robinson and his wife, Margaret, the refit means a new lease of life for the Castle Street busi ness that first came into being in the town 55 years ago.

about, will be Impressed even before they enter the premises. Gone is the original double frontage and in its place an attrac tive arcade, extending 10 feet into the shop and ensuring that there is as much, if not more, window

display space, as there used to be.

Once inside, the customer

will find that the shop is, as before, on two levels. But both the ground floor and first

have changed almost be yond recognition. Down

stairs. three smaller

rooms have been attrac tively converted into a

large shop area. Although created dur

ing the modernisation, at tractive archways in this part of the premises pro vide evidence of the building’s age. For they have been formed from stone walls that are three-feet wide. Said Mr Robinson: “The shop is very old. We don’t know just how old but the al terations have revealed that the premises are built 011 the same outcrop of rock as the castle.

“ While wishing to

modernise the premises completely, every effort has been made to retain their character." he added. Upstairs, for example.

where similar alterations have been carried out an interesting oak beam was discovered during roof repairs.

GOOD

“ It was simply a tree trunk—unprepared and W the bark still intact. This

has been incorporated in tl,e new decor, " It was in a good state

of preservation as were the smaller Joists, clearly made from branches of the tree— which shows the building goes back many years." s

Other finds have included

an old iron fireplace com plete with side boiler and oven, discovered behind a false partition but unfor tunately in too poor a state of repair to preserve, and an ancient bath fashioned in glazed sandstone.

The building also possesses a stable and cobbled court

yard as further proof of its age. Founder of the business

home. Although no longer actively involved in the business, she still shows a lively interest.

Mrs Grlmshaw set up

shop in 1919 in premises in Wellgate. Moving to Church Street three years later, she staved there for more than 40 years before transferring to Castle street in 1964.

LOYAL

Mrs Robinson now runs the shop with tile help of a loyal staff of five, who have

been with the business for many years. The overall conversion

plan was Mr and Mrs Robin son’s own idea and was im plemented by local architect Mr Alwyn Jackson.

Said Mr Robinson: “ We

have the highest admiration for Mr Jackson and the local tradesmen who carried out the work not only for their skill but for their ap plication to the job despite the difficulties caused by the recent national emergency.

our appreciation to them and congratulate them on completing the work within the scheduled time.”
