our Sixth Steam Up at Gisburn. Wc have combined with your local newspaper. The Clitheroe Advertiser and Times to give de­ tails of Ihc engines and organs that have been booked to be with us this Spring Bank Holiday. The Steam Traction Engine in its many diverse forms was pre-eminent, both agriculturally and commercially for some 90 years. The heyday of the traction engine dates from the 1890’s to the 1920’s. Many councils still used steam tollers in the I960's. Steam wagons were developed to a high degree of efficiency in their final phase up to 1939, using many features


found in their petrol driven rivals. The diesel engine with its cheap fuel sounded the death knell of commercial road haulage by steam. The steam engine was an undeni­ able personality, never harsh, but always willing and, who knows, with the ever-


increasing cost of fuel oil We may yet see its return to our roads. Bring this page along to our Steam Up as your programme, we hope you find our show enjoyable, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Street Organ. This organ was purchased in 1966 from Mr Henk Mohl- mann, one of the main organ builder/owners of Amster­ dam. Since the war the pre­ sence of these organs in the streets of Holland has been on the decline. The licensees are turning to mor? re­ munerative forms of employ­ ment, and the younger men arc not following in father s footsteps

Built 1930. This engine was delivered new to the North Riding County Council as a Roller and used until i960, when it

was sold to a firm of contrac­ tors in the Richmond, Yorks., area. It was purchased by the present owner i.n 1968 in scrap condition, partly rebuilt


and renovated as a Roller. During 1970/71 the owner converted it to a tractor. Owner: R. Oliver, Bishop Auckland.

Reg. No. AA 5116. Partially restored. Was new as a tractor to an estate in Kent, went

89 Key Gavioli. Manufactured about 1897, new to Hibble and Mellors on a roundabout, was bought in 1969 from Butlins at Filey in a very bad, dilapidated state as scrap. Completely rebuilt by present owner and Mr )ohn Gregory, a master cutler from Sheffield, without whose help it would virtually have been an Impossible task, and still works on bellows as originally made to. A great credit to all people concerned with the restoration work.

89 Key Gavioli. This is a Black Forest Gavioli, believed to have been built about 1 850 as a Barrel Organ. Converted to key _ frame operation on the Gavioli scale. Used by Dutch showmen until


1970’s. Purchased in 1973 and undergoing restoration.

Limonaire 45 Key. Much ^travelled in earlier years on the Continental Fair Circuit, and very well appre­ ciated at the many rallies it attends in this country. Much of the music has been cut by the present owner.

‘Pendle Queen.’


New to Claytons, cl Lesds, then worked in a strap yard


until 1931, then covered up with scrap. It was unearthed after 30 years beneath 2,000 tons of scrap and cut up. It was purchased in J969 and completely rebuilt by the pre­ sent owner and his friends, took part in the 1970 Trans- Pennine Run and won the Concour d’Elegance, covering the 63 miles In 11 hours.

New to Leeds Corporation as a gulley emptier and worked until 1941. It was then laid in a scrap yard until 1961 when it was cut up and left in a heap until 1969 when the present owner purchased it in bits and pieces. Renova­


tion took approximately 10 months with the help of friends and fellow enthusiasts. Believed to be the only re­ maining wagon of this type in the world.

Weight 12i Tons. This engine was exhibited by its manufacturers, Marshalls, of Gainsborough, at the Liver­


pool Show in 1910. It worked until 1959 in Lincolnshire. Mr F. H. Kidd, of Southery. bought it and rebuilt it over a period of 3 years. It was then purchased by the present owner, who steamed it home from Lincolnshire, the journey


taking 4 days. Owner: J. J. Ostle, Long Preston, Near Settle.

This engine is believed lo have spent most of its work­ ing life in the Pontefract/ Wakefield area, threshing hauling and doing general work, the owners being Thomas Fairburn, of Ponte­ fract. and later Messrs Wards, of Ackworth. It was pur­ chased from W . Douthwaite, of Skelton, in 1966 by the present owner who renovated it first attending rallies in 1967. Owner: E. Myers, Loughrigg, Near Amblesido.
