‘Pendle Queen.’ New to Claytons, of Leeds, then worked in a scrap yard until 1931, then covered up with scrap.’ It was unearthed after 30 years beneath 2,000 tons of scrap and cut up. It was purchased in 1959 and completely rebuilt by the pre­ sent owner and his friends, took part in the I970 Trans- Pennine Run and won the Concour d'Elegancc, covering


the 53 miles in 11 hours. Owner: T. ]. Varlcy, Cisburn.


No. 2 Yorkshire 2 Ton Wagon


Built 1905, works no.


117, reg. no. CA 170. Worked in Wales 1905 to 1924, then left for scrap. Brought to Yorkshire 1972. Probably the smallest Steam Wagon ever built and in pre­ servation. In final stage of renovation.


No. 3 Yorkshire WG. This is a shaft driven York­ shire on pneumatics. It is hoped that it will be ready for this Rally but at the time of going to press it was not certain to be able to attend but well worth while watching out for at later Rallies this year. Owner: W. Fcarnicy, Castlcford.


No. 4 Fowler Underfype.


No. 19708. ‘Pendle Prince.’ Reg. No. UB 8660.


6/7 Tons. Built 1931. New to Leeds Corporation as a gulley emptier and worked until 1941. It was then laid in a scrap yard until 1961 when it was cut up and left in a heap until 1969 when the present owner purchased it in bits and pieces. Renova­ tion took approximately 10 months with the help of friends and fellow enthusiasts. Believed to be the only re­ maining wagon of this type in the world. Owner: T. ). Varley, Gisburn.

No. 9075. ‘Holmevalian.’


120 b.h.p. Reg. No. BEV 467. 51 Tons.


Built 1934.


Shaft driven. Originally delivered to Brown and Sons. Timber Merchants, Chelmsford. It was then owned by the Castle Firebrick Co., Flintshire, until 1947. It was purchased in near dere­ lict condition in 1965 and completely rebuilt over a period of three years by the present owners. She won 2nd prize in the Steam Class in the 1968 London to Brighton run. Owners: Messrs Brook and Hirst, Hoimfirth.

Built 1931. Supplied new to Thomas Sugden, Flour Millers, of Brig- house, from whom it was pur­ chased for road works by Clossops Limited. It was pur­ chased in 1964 in scrap con­ dition and completely rebuilt by the present owner. Owner; C. E. Aston, Brotherfon.


No. 8 Sentinel Undertype S4. No. 9003. ‘Pendle Lady’ 120 b.h.p. Reg. No. VE 9963. 51 Tons. Built 1934.


Shaft driven. Delivered new to Foster Mills, of Cambridge, who were taken over by Homepride Flour Mills, the wagon then being transferred to the Liv>er- pool area, where it worked until 1953, travelling daily into Cheshire.


This engine was exhibited by its manufacturers, Marshalls, of Gainsborough, at the Liver­ pool Show in 1910. It worked until 1959 in Lincolnshire. Mr F. H. Kidd, of Southery, bought it and rebuilt it over a period 'Of 3 years. It was then purchased by the present owner, who steamed it home from Lincolnshire, the journey


taking 4 days.

Street Organ. This organ was purchased m 1966 from Mr Henk Mohl- mann, one of the main organ builder/owners of Amster­ dam. Since the war the pre­ sence of these organs in the streets of Holland has been on the decline. The licensees are turning to more re­ munerative forms of employ­ ment, and the younger men are not following in father s footsteps taking organs


around the street.

This engine is believed to have spent most of its work­


ing life in the Pontefract/ Wakefield area, threshing, hauling and doing general work, the owners being Thomas Fairburn, of Ponte­ fract, and later Messrs Wards, of Ackworth. It was pur­ chased from W. Douthwaite. of Skelton, in 1966 by the present owner who renovated it. first attending rallies in 1967.

No. 14 89 Key Gavioli. Manufactured about 1897 new to Hibbic and Mcllors on a roundabout, was bought in 1969 from Butlins at Filey in


a very bad, dilapidated state as scrap. Completely rebuilt by present owner and Mr John Gregory, a master cutler from Sheffield without whose help it would virtually have been an impossible task, and still works on bellows as originally made to. A great credit to all people concerned with the restoration work. Owner: Mr E. Myers, of Ambicsidc.

Probably one of the oldest advance types in existence. Found in Bury in bits and pieces and has had a ^ re­ markable job done on it in the last month. Full marks to the team of enthusiasts at Riminton. At time of going to press we hope it will be able to attend.

No. 17 Fowler. Built 1895.


Possibly the oldest Fowler roller in the country, was new probably to War Department as a tractor, bought by present owner during first World War and made into a roller and used by them until the early 60's. then laid up and reno­ vated 1970/71. Driven to Rally by Ian Race and friends.

No. IS 1926 6 Ton Wallis and Stevens Advance Type Roller. Works No. 7867.


Spent its working life for Lytham Corporation. Found derelict at Classon Dock, res­ tored 1968/69 by john Armcr.

Built 1916. ‘Pendle Witch.’


New to Morecambe Council and used by them until 1958, then sold to Isaac .Ball, of Wharles, from whom it was purchased by Walton-le-Dale Council, where it worked until January, 1969. Purchased by the present owner in February, 1969, and restored to its original condition.

Started life as a Tractor. Con­ verted to a roller during last v/ar, then to Suttons, of Beckermet, who sold to Tommy Hodgson, of Blencow, Converted to Showmans. Bought in June, 1972, and has been completely over­ hauled and repainted.

‘Hunslet.’ Reg. no. VN 2092. lOi Tons. Built 1930.


This engine was delivered new to the North Riding County Council as a Roller and used until 1960, when it was sold to a firm of contrac­ tors in the Richmond, Yorks., area, it was purchased by the present owner in 1968 in scrap condition, partly rebuilt and renovated as a Roller. During 1970/71 the owner converted it to a tractor.

This is a convertible type now run as a tractor. It was pur­ chased in 1965 as a roller in derelict condition from Isaac Ball, of Wharles. It was then stripped down and completely rebuilt in a short time into a very fine engine. Driven to Rally by owner and friends.

No. 23 Burrell No. 33808 ‘Forester.’ Reg. no. AH 570. Built 1919. It was new to a man in Nor­


folk as a tractor, then to Isaac Ball who made it into a roller, was bought in 1959 in dere­ lict condition, absolutely stripped in pieces and new firebox fitted and rebuilt again as a tractor. Driven to Rally by present owner and
