NEIL EASTWOOD—NELSON. REDMANS intSmmKTinmrr i The friendly store REDMAN’S SURVIVE ‘SUPER’ ERA

A SAVOURY whiff of Danish bacon brings just one name to mind— Redman and Co.—the Burnley-based chain of 14 grocery stores, which has built up a reputation for speciality goods second to none.

Bacon is just one of their

special lines, and perhaps it is this emphasis on certain products, of which Danish bacon is the most renowned that has kept Redmans prospering through this age of supermarkets.

So many chain stores MARKETING director Air Chris Redman.

have had their backs to the wall, floundered and flopped, but through this era of the giant stores Redmans have remained firmly anchored in spite of increased competi tion.

The firm's marketing

director, Mr Chris Redman, says: “ The business is run ning at record level in each of the branches. We have something to offer which tire supermarkets can't touch in in the way of a specialised personal service for bacon an'd allied products. Many people dislike the cold, im personal atmosphere of supermarkets and buy the bulk of their groceries from smaller. friendlier stores such as ours."

BACKBONE He is right. There may

be families who do buy at supermarkets but who stick to the old family custom of going to Redmans for cer tain goods like bacon and other provisions.

“These.” says Mr Redman, BRANCH inspector Mr Derek Walton.

“ are the backbone of our business.”

^ d t ^ t U i n g f e a t u r e Housewives searching for

some special item will turn to each other and ask: “ Have you tried Redmans?" for the name has come to be associated with fine pro ducts and a range of goods stamped with quality. The odd item unavailable

elsewhere usually turns up at Redmans. Gimmicks, offers, all sorts

of tricks of trade have failed to keep most of the old chain stores in business. Yet Redmans have never

stooped to gimmicky sales, though the name lends itself to publicity stunts like red vans or little red men. but it lias never been necessary for this firm of renown to resort to trickery.

SURVIVE They have prospered be

cause they give value for money, and because they provide the unusual, like pastry mixes, broth mixes, nut mixes and a host of varieties of goods which cannot be obtained else where. Mr Redman says that he

does not dispute the impor tant role that supermarkets play in the modern retailing scene.

that other similar concerns lack.

UNUSUAL Trying to work out why a “ But,” he says, “ We have

always felt that the smaller grocer has an important part to play as long as he sets his stall out efficiently and offers good value," and who can doubt his sincerity?

Redmans survived to pros

per because they g ive quality, personal service and an atmosphere in which to shop that many house wives still prize.

“ In fact," says Mr Red

man, “ we ourselves were not too efficient when extra competition first burst on the scene a few years ago, but considerable reorganisa tion and the exceptional loyalty of our staff and cus tomers helped us to weather the storm and eventually come out smiling. " We are ready now to

expand, and, in fact, have four or five possible sites enrmaked to add to the one new store already opened this year." He mentions the loyalty

of his staff, but staff are not loyal just because it’s the thing to do—they must have reasons for saying with an old-established firm. It isn't easy to put into words what Redmans have

Market Hall, Burnley. HARRY SEED—

Redmans store or market stall can be spotted long before the name above it is puzzling, but it can be done. Is it that they set out their wares differently, or do they just sell unusual products which make the setting stand out? They do both. It's hard to pinpoint, but

Redmans do look different. It's the place where ham shanks look pink and invit ing: where there arc so many choice rolls of Danish bacon and ham that buying is a pleasure. Redmans — the firm with

the big name for bacon, but that is only a part of the story.
