IMAGINE going shopping, parking , your car in a large car park literally across the road from shops of all des criptions or even parking right outside the shops with no traffic wardens or yellow lines in sight! No, this is not just a

shopper’s dream, in Whal ley it is a reality. Not long ago the' village

was covered almost con tinually, by a cloud of diesel fumes • and .heavy lorries thundered through all • day long, making • shopping at leisure almost unbearable. The constant stream of

traffic made parking difficult and crossing the road was a marathon event.

past. The new Clitheroe— Whalley by-pass carries the bulk of the traffic past the village and in the not too distant future the Easterly by-pass will ensure that Whalley is a completely quiet haven. For a village, Whalley

has a truly remarkable range of shops and . there are several cafes where satisfied shoppers can have a pleasant cup of tea to

round off their afternoon. The village has several licensed premises, where catering facilities are pro vided. Already, Whalley’s poten

tial as a first-class shopping centre has been recognised by many people who travel regularly from the Fylde coast and even Cheshire, to browse among the attractive shops. The village has success

fully managed to combine first-class service, new and up-to-date, methods with the much appreciated personal approach of the village shopkeeper. Abreast of trends there is

a supermarket but one that has not become a vast, im personal conglomeration of shelves — a family s h o p which has carried on the same business in Whalley for many years. There is much tradition

in Whalley—on both sides of the counter. Sons and daughters carry o n th e businesses when th ei r parents retire, and children grow up and marry and buy from the’ same shops that their parents have patron ised for many years before them.

Good quality is the key

note of the goods on sale in Whalley, whether its a crusty loaf still warm from the ovens or some fresh vegetables from the green grocers. One can choose from a

very wide range of fabrics and materials for dress making, and all the neces sary accompaniments for the home dress-maker arc there too. For women who want an

upTto-the-minute outfit, an extensive selection can be found. As soon as London has a new style, so has Whalley. When you have chosen

your outfit, there is a choice of shoe shops selling well- known makes where you c a n t r y o n fashionable styles. Of course with Whalley

being on the fringe of Pendle Witch Co u n t r y , some of the shops sell the popular witches on their broomsticks a n d other mementoes. No village would be a

village without the tradi tional shop which sells all sorts of goodies, and Whal ley has such a shop. After an afternoon of

shopping and looking at the well-dressed windows, there are at least four cafes where you can have some refresh ments. Many of the surrounding villages also use Whalley as

their shopping centre, with pe o p le coming regularly from Wiswell, Sabden, Bil lington, Langlio and Mitton.

Attractive The shops are not too far

away from ■those living on the . Calderstones Hospital estate, many-of;whom enjoy walking down to the‘middle of the village.. Those who live in that area, of Whalley are served by a good groc er’s shop and off licence, not far from the hospital’s gates. Whalley’s clean, attrac

tive shops not only attract people passing through the village, they . have also caught the eye of the judges of the Best Kept Village Competition. Twice, in fact two years

running, a. Whalley shop has been awarded the prize for the best kept-shop. In 1968, Bartlett’s florists re ceived the prize and the fol lowing year it was awarded to Maureen Cookson.
