British Legion, and it was a proud moment when, in recognition of the Legion’s services over the last half century, Her Majesty The Queen graciously commanded that, Iiencefortli, we should he known as <4The Royal British Legion”.


The Legion exists to help members, of the ex-Services com­


munity and their dependants who suffer hardship or distress. Particularly is it concerned with those who need, more than the Welfare State can provide — security, comradeship.' homes, and above all, self-respect. Unfortunately, the annual Poppy Appeal collection has not kept pace with the rising costs of the various relief schemes; indeed, only last year the income from that source fell short of the total benevolent expenditure by £200,000.


Contrary to any misconception, the Legion lias the same


measure of responsibility to the young soldier now serving in Northern Ireland as to the veteran of Passcliendaclc. Efforts on behalf of ex-Servicemen of each of the three Services and their families continue unabated, but they are entirely dependent on the income derived from the Poppy Appeal.
