THE CARPET sets tho scene, and when it is an Axminster or Wilton woven ono, it

get all about it once it’s in stalled because it' needs so little care and attention. A patterned one such as this ‘Dunelm’ Axminster by Hugh Maokay is ideal for a bache lor flat or working couple. Suitable for medium domes tic use (BCC classification),

them attached to Axmin- sters and Wiltons in pattern ’books and samples, caapet squares and broadloom pieces on stacks in the middle of the showroom, as well as on narrow and wide—or broad loom—rolls.

But in another home the dining-room may be fur nished with a, television set and easy chairs, and obvi ously receives much more concentrated wear. I t would, of course, need a heavier quality caipet — in probably Heavy Domestic grade. Let’s take a couple, living

in a flat who are out at work all day. The Medium Domes tic classification would be sufficiently strong, as there would be little wear for most of the time, no stairs—-which demand a heavier grade of

COFFEE PARTY CARPET CHAT

IN MY PART of the world, morning coffee party chat keeps turning lo carpels. I suppose it’s understandable. There isn’t one among us who hasn't got a fitted carpet somewhere in her home now and most of us are getting

round to wall-to-wall throughout. Well, it saves cleaning time

. and none of us likes to

scrub and polish bare floors. And it’s marvellous how a fitted caipet keeps the noise down; makes all the differ ence—radios, television . . . and so many of the kids make their own music, or, at any rate a lot of noise . . . Then there are the planes, more and more of ■them and -they are even worse than cars when it comes to disturbing the domestic peace.

However, carpts are full of

surprises nowadays. When we bought our first, way back in 1949, we just went, to a well known shop and told -the

salesman what we wanted. There wasn’t much choice •then so soon after the war, and our fawn, coloured Wil ton, made of wool, seemed dear at the' time. But we've still got it—twenty years later and two homes removed. Cut down to the size of my teenage daughter's room, it’s indestructible.

Since then we, and most

of our neighbours, have •tried all sorts of new types and they do provide hilarious topics of conversation. But that’s about it. In the shops most caipets look and feel more or less the same. I don't mean the colours, nor the many patterns and textures, but the backs and top sur faces . . . all

terrifically

strong and firm to the touch of the hand. But you soon find out bow different they can be in use.

One of the girls complained

the other morning that she simply can’t shift the bits of

by Belinda Paul

and he is patient when you ask him questions. But neither he nor his salesmen, ever blind you with scientific gobbledegook. I am glad his string of retail shops has flourished for years.

‘‘Let’s take your tales one

by one,” suggested Mi-. Blon- dell. “Your friend who finds the living-room Axminster carpet easier to sweep than ■the now bedroom one, absolutely right. And it has nothing to do with plain or pattern. It's a matter of car pet construction. Axmin sters—and for that matter Wiltons too—have a woven warp-and-weffc backing which allows the air to circulate freely. Dirt and fluff are easily removed, especially w-'ith the suction action of a vacuum cleaner. Y o u r friend’s bedroom carpet has probably got a rubber or latex back.

“The. little shocks some

people experience in newly carpeted areas. That’s called static electricity and has only indirectly to do with carpet ing as- walking causes some friction. Static is ■ really due to dry atmosphere and cen tral heating. I t can be irri tating in big offices with a lot of metal furniture and machinery, especially i f the carpeting is made of a hun dred per cent non-absorbent man-made fibre. In the home static is quite simple to avoid if you keep a bowl of water —or even a vase of flowers or a plant—in a centrally

sewing cotton and fluff that heated room. There are some seem to appear f r om nowhere, however often she runs the vacuum cleaner over her new bedroom carpet. Yet she has no trouble at all with the chintzy floral Axminster

in their living-room. And she swears it ’s not because the upstairs one is plain and shows the dirt more . . .

And Mary-Ann told us that

her husband finds it awfully amusing -that the girls at his office keep getting tiny but startling electric shocks since some new type of carpeting has been installed. A hun dred per cent man-made fibre carpet was chosen, he was told, because spilled liquids such as -tea and ink don’t sink in. Easy to wipe it clean, they said. Well, i f it’s not one thing it ’s another.

Enough, I thought, of the

anti-static sprays, but they don’t last very long and who wants -the extra work and ex pense of applying them at home? Much simpler to buy carpets which minimise the possibility of static. Axmin- ster and Wiltons are best be cause there are so many dif ferent ranges which contain wool and nylon. The wool holds a bit of humidity and •the nylon gives' the extra strength.

“That’s the thing about

coffee party chitchat and offered to seek out Mr. Blon- dell. He really knows. He is a carpet retailer who has seen new things come and go for years. He visits fac tories, he reads those -trade and technical publications, he listens to all kinds of ex perts, he sends his staff on maker as well as by ithe dn- courses to keep up-to-date, dustry jointly.
