‘NEW LOOK’ BANK IS TO MAKE BUSINESS A PLEASURE
‘If you can't move it, paint it.’ This oltl Service
maxim could be applied to Martins Bank in Castle SI reel, Clitheroe, which has just undergone an extensive face-lift. Certainly the building is sound enough in spite oC its
70 years, so there was no question of moving it. Cleaning the stonework and repainting have restored the exterior but inside a complete transformation has taken place. The bank’s architect
has re-modelled the in terior to create the most modern city office, Mr. John Watson, tire manager, said. “Now we have the bright and cheerful sur roundings that help to make business a pleasure.”
Phe gloomy portals have
given way to glass doors. Beyond these is the en trance hall where, without actually writing ‘welcome’ on the doormat. Martins are saying it with flowers arranged in a plant trough running the length of the facing wall. Above this is the bank's

Mosaic
A suspended ceiling has removed the Victorian
loftiness from the office where the new counter .in afrormosia, faced with Sicilian white marble, has room for six cashiers and an inquiry position. The rearrangement of
the office has allowed the creation of an interview room as well as the mana ger’s room. Providing the contrast to
the green vinyl floor and the silver , grey walls is a mosaic mitral. Its abstract design has. local history and the castle as its themes, and the mural is possibly the only modern example of this ancient art to .be seen in the area. Martins Bank can trace
its Clitheroe connections back t o 1 1838 when a branch of the Craven Bank was opened in the town. In 1906 the Craven Bank
amalgamated with the Bank of Liverpool whose name was changed in 1928 to Martins Bank. The connection of Mr.
John Watson, the manager, with Clit'heroe is some what s ho rte r — seven months to be exact.
Farming Yet Mr. Watson has
brought to this predomi nantly agricultural area a sound knowledge of farm ing li nance. His career began at
Bingley in 1936 and, apart from service in the Royal Navy during the war. he has worked throughout at branches in farming areas.
A new look has been given by cleaning the stonework and the lilting of a smart glass door.

Martins Bank, was founded as the Bank of
Liverpool in 1831. Its early growth was
characterised by a series of mergers anti amalgama tions—a pattern of de velopment shown by all the present-dtp English Clear ing Banks—which brought traditions of service exten ding back to the sixteenth century. The Bank of Liverpool
came tj Clitheroe in 1906 when t amalgamated with the Ctaven Bank. This local bank with its
head:, office in Skiplon could trace its origins to the Quaker tankers, Birk-
