burst of applause on Tuesday evening; as the Mayor of the ancient borough of Clitheroe presented the ornate honorary freedom scroll to Mrs. Phyllis Todd — the second woman of Clitheroe.

flowers, colourful mayoral robes -and glittering council regalia, Mrs. Todd — in a dark brown suit and hatt — looked overwhelmed and slightly bewildered as praise was showered on to her record of service ,to the borough. Then came a telegram

from husband Harry, which the mayor read, ‘Hearty con gratulations. I am proud of you.’ And Mr. Todd got up from his seat, walked to the front of the chamber and kissed his wife. For Mrs. Todd, of ‘Lyn

wood’ , . W h a 11 e y Road, Clitheroe, it was the end of what she described as “ an overwhelming event.” She has served 26 organis ations since she first came to

the town. Among the 80 guests were

the Mayor and Mayoress of Clitheroe, Coun. and Mrs. John Hall, former Mayors and Mayoresses, MP for the Clitheroe Division Sir Frank Pearson and Lady Pearson. Others present were County

Councillor H. Pemberton, chair man of Clitheroe Rural District Council, Councillor H. Holden, head of Clitheroe police, Inspec tor H. Dickinson, and the only other woman to have recieved the freedom . of the borough Miss E. R. Garnett. In proposing that Mrs. Todd

be admitted honorary freeman of the borough, the Mayor said, “Throughout Mrs. Todd’s years of endeavour, it has been people

who mattered.” He added that no matter what

(class or what religion they followed, anyone in need of help drew Mrs. Todd’s help instinc

tively. "I give one example of Mrs.

Todd's work, which shows how she is regarded in every organis ation. For 16 years, she has

served every Mayoress with the ..5

same friendliness- and care whatever their station. These ladies, coming fresh to their task, have an automatic confi dence in the knowledge that things -will go right with the Mayoress’s Ladies’ Committee so long as Mrs. Todd is there.” . He added. "We can feel a

tinge of regret for Mr. Todd in having to share his wife’s interest with so many others. But we know that, since his retirement, .he has been Mrs. Todd’s most ardent supporter and has himself no mean record of service.
