ing Trutex firm nestle on the banks ot the n\*.r 1,1 , . -John The ancient water c om mill which belongs
Banks and his son Wi l l iam” and a few other bun ,r,on to it became the site tor the first cloth weaving a In 1861 presumably one o f
these other buildings was leas ed to Wi l l iam Frankland as a weaving shed or “ power- lo om manufactory, and a mill house adjoining the corn mill near a reservoir situated the third uppermost from the mi l l" . The lease was for a 20- ycar period at £48 per year. Soon after this comes the
lirst reference to Grindleton Mills, a name that is still in use.
Mr. John Rutherford was
the next on the scene in 1904 when he bought a mortgage on the property. In this year a new' small turbine was put in and manufacturing carried on with 124 looms and oil lamps. T w o years later. Mr. Ruth
erford bought the mill from the Green Brothers, several descendants o f whom re still working with Trutex.

facturers in Blackburn was bought and at this time the company was producing ladies' and girls' wear.
The years since the war
have seen an increase in the production o f boys' and girls' "■ear. and particularly in re cent years the strong special isation o f school wear. In I960 the reins were taken
over by another son-in-law. Mr. John D. Hodgson, and in the short space o f time since then the company has almost doubled its turnover. At the end o f I960 Trutex
acquired and modernised for mer mill premises at West Bradford a mile from Grindle ton. for distribution purposes. This released the whole o f the Grindleton premises for
offices and storage. In 1961-2 the former ware
house at Grindleton was c o n verted into the most modern otliccs in the district and this modernisation is now being
completed by the formation ol a conference room and exe cutive office block which should be ready lor use in two months' time. In 1963 the company
bought out the firm o f Neatex Ltd., o f Stockport. Here they have continued to make school skirts which arc marketed by the stiles force under the trade name o f "'Neatex” . At the end o f I9fi3 a mill
was also purchased in the Henthorn district o f Cl ithcroe where now "R a v e " young men's shirts are made, l i t is factory, known as Henthorn Manufacturers. Lid. , with its light, airy rooms, rubber tiled floors and up-to-date sewing machines is one ol the most modern factories in the c oun try.
