New school uniforms are

prepared after consultations among many experts

/• CHILDREN require a new school uniform or a replacement for the old one at the beginning ^ of the autumn term, and the bulk of Trutex advertising in the national press is geared to the peak schoolwear buying time towards the end of the summer holidays. Advertisements are also placed in school magazines and

in trade publications. In 1963. the advertising system was expanded: during last year, 1964, a similar scheme was used

featuring bigger advertisements and an increased number o f insertions. Fo r each group o f products

there is a product manager whose duties are numerous. It is the duty o f the p r o duct manager to assess the desirability o f offering and making certain garments in an appropriate cloth styling and size range. and to compi le ranges o f samples in anticipation o f p u b

lic requirement. In this way they touch on market research and work in close liaison with the marketing research section. Each product manager is

responsible in his o r her own department for cloth buying

and for research into the qual ities. constructions and prices

o f cloth and market prices. They possess a knowledge

o f such tests as arc required to be made on cloth and on the finished garment. Sizes are always open to revision and product managers keep a constant check on present day sizing and on how children arc altering o r maturing both physically and in the fashion sense.

PLANNING Finally the product manager

has to present the go ods to the salesmen and must con-

vince them that these goods are right for the market.

The product ion planning

and control department acts as a liaison between the pro duct and sales groups and its manager is direct ly respon

sible to the managing direc tor. The success o f this de partment is concerned with satisfying the requirements of the customers as is every other department in the company. They are responsible fo r sup plying the customers’ orders when they arc required.

It is generally agreed that

in the schoolwear trade the sales department is the back bone o f the whole company. Each representative manages a certain area o r ‘ground’ and calls on retailers at his ground. He is trained to work to a policy' o f methods and plans as laid down by the general sales manager.

In this highly competitive market it is necessary to use

methods o f selling which in- s u r e t h a t t h e g a rm e n t s w i l l sell themselves in the shop

and on these lines Trutex are fol lowing the trends o f self- selection which give a bright presentation and inducement to buy.

The representative is res

ponsible not only for selling the go ods to the retailer, but also for placing the self-selec tion units in suitable places where they' will be used to their greatest advantage.

In this way the garments

are being sold to the casual shopper not just to the mother

who comes in and asks speci fically' for Trutex. A larger market is thus gradual ly b e ing set up. There are three separate

markets aimed at and so each range has three distinctive di f ferentials. Fo r example, o f three boys shirts in popl in, each has a distinctive price difference and distinctive ap peal.

This pattern is similar in

all the ranges but it is inter esting to note that the three different markets cannot be

judged on the income level of the purchasers.

A H A P P Y centenary smile from members of the Trutex Board. Eeft-right they are Airs. J. JR. Hodgson (director), Mrs. E- Charnley (director), Mr. John D. Hodgson (managing director). Behind is director Mr. T . Robinson.

SALES PLAN

THE Trutex sales plan is that the garments made by

Clitheroc Shirtings. Ltd. , and also under the trade name o f Trutex should be easily pur chased by every mother in

Britain fo r her children. In the last five years it has

been planned to expand the market by reducing the areas o f the representatives and thus increasing the sales force so that with the smaller areas they can penetrate the market more powerful ly and more efhcicntlv.

It is essential that the right

stocks are ready' in the ware house at West Bradford to meet the customers’ demands, at the times the garments arc wanted. Fo r this reason a great deal o f attention is paid to correct planning and c on trol o f production. Forecasts for do7.enage sales on indivi dual product lines are made

-\5^*tbe product managers and lh& marketing managers, as mfich as twelve months in advance.
