RAIN HITS FAMILY SHOW b u :
BAD WEATHER BLOW TO FINANCES
But quality and high standard maintained
]* OW cloud, rain, mud and still more rain kcpl the crowds away from Clitheroe Show, on Saturday. Tractors dragging heavy vehicles through the thick mud were a common and dis
couraging sight. The windswept show field presented a dismal appearance
in the morning, when the attendance was exceptionally light. Bright periods in the afternoon
brought with them an increase in attendacc. but even so. the final figure of 4.000 is well below last year’s. In fact,
section for this part, cf the . the r e were only
about two thirds the number of spectators, and consequently the show suffered a severe financial lass. Another year like this could cas;. serious doubts over the
shows future. As usual, the cattle section created most interest among the
world, the goats always attract much attention. In recent years it has become more prominent.
Such is the enthusiasm of the
exhibitors in this section that manv-of them spent the night prior to the show sleeping on the show field under canvas tending their goats, which were com peting m a nnlkmg competition.
The competition began at G-30
Clubs their marquee and demon strations at tra ct e d laigc
gatherings. Probably chief interest to the .
women visitors to the .show would be a long look round the Women’s Institute’s tent. Displays of handicrafts and
horticulture drew great admira tion. while there were many exhibits in the confectionery section which made the mouth
water.Home - made whies. 1 c m o n chnese and v ari ous jams attracted favourable comment, while arrangements of flowers added a welcome blaze of colour. The dogs always have their
own nucleus of enthusiasts as well as interested by-standers. Fortunately the judging was able to be done out of doors m me

quickly cut up. But later in the dav the handful of spectators swelled into quite a large crowd.
