T'lie saddle and harness classes were well filled, but there was only a sparse selection of hack neys in hand. In view of the efforts noir being made to stimulate the breeding of horses for army purposes, it was en couraging to find about a dozen claimants for the prizes in the classes for^army remounts from four to ten years old, a stipulation being that the Army Remount Department should have the option of purchase. Save for the classes for brood marcs and foals, the sliow of shaft-fillers did not reach the standard of some piast years. 'I'hc belated hay harvest and the counter attraction at Southport doubtless accounted for many absentees in this dopartment. On the other hand, cattle formed a meritorious collection, and herds of Air. J. H. Aladen and Lady Thursby were reiiresentcd. The show of dairy produce included classes for large and loaf cheese, in both of which the entries came from the Goosnargh district. A note worthy feature of the sheep classes was (ho great success of Air. JJavid Hague, Co]iy Nook, Clitheroe, in lonks. As at the Lancasluro Show, ho virtually swept the board in his classes. aiiinial show, the ninety-ninth of^the series, was lield on Monday in the^usual liold—luider tlie lee of Whalleyi^Eab,— wliicli was conveniently arranged.^, ^The weather in the morning was»duil___but fortunately rain kept off and there^was a very good attendance of fanners, etc., from different parts of the district. The show came on the fringe of the Lancashire County Show at Southport, and although the exhibition must have suffered ^to some e.xteut in consequence, tho^entrics reached the respectable^j^total of^l247, about a hundred fower^ than last^year, ami 244 beliiud 1907.j,^Tliis year^the jiigeons, dogs, and childi'cn’s di'awings oil exhibit made 128 more than lastjyear, ami there was a largo faUing-off iiij^the more important classes, particularly in liorses and sheep. The daii-yj^pi’oduoe, too, for some remarkable reason showed a decrease—-nearly 50 per cent, in fact. Whalley has ahvays had a good name for its blitter and cheese makers, but _^tlioy seeeind to have passed the show by^this year. Eo doubt a big effort will bo made next year when the Society will celebrate its centenary, to recover tile ground lost. But even though Monday’s show was ■smaller than its predecessor’s it seemed hardly the less interesting. Whalley is alwaj's an attractive show. It has the simple, true country ring about it, like .Ashbourne Sliow and one or two other nlder-standing show's, and ■ tlierc is no place for the hurdy-gurdy order of things that tends to creep in among agriculture nowadays.
