The choice of organist at the Parish

Church has fallen upon the gentleman who presided at the organ last Sunday, Mr. William Baxter, F.R.C.O, of the Kings- bridge Parish Church, Devonshire. His performance on the organ hi.st Sunday, especially at the recital after the evening service, won for him golden opinions. .A largo congreg.ation, inchiding many musical critics, had the pleasure to hear him and from the pronouncement of many of these, there is little doubt but that the Parish Clnireh has secured a man of exceptional ability, both as an organist, musician and tutor. So well satisfied were the church authorities that they oiVered Mr. Baxter the |iositiouou Sunday evening and he wrote his acceptance on Tuesday. He will probably lake up the duties in about two nionllis time.

Dear Mr. Editor, AA'ill you allow me a little space in your

colmiins to vent what is to many besides myself a real grievance. On Wednesday last, I went to the Public Hall to hear the Besses o’ th’ Barn band, and was charmed with the performance. But what disgusted both myself and others was the -wholesale striking ot matches, aud smoking in the room, which was literally filled with smoke. Now, Mr. Editor, I contend that this is not fair. It was not only an intolerable nuisance to many but a positive danger. AVith the man who enjoys his weed I have no quarrel whatever, but surely there is a time for everything, and this was neither the time nor place for a smoke. AA'hat with prohibitive notices all round the room, and a policeman in the room it did seem a little bit " oil.” Thanking you for your courtesy, I beg to subscribe myself—
