FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3bd, IsaD Zbc trimes, THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION. A REVIEW OF THE SITUATION.
Now that the Municipal Election is oyer, there is a little breathing room, and time
to look the situation, over calmly. ■ T o begin with, the Liberals have lost heavily, and their future prospects are tar
from rosy. That three of their men should come out o f the Council Chi^be , and only one be returned again, is bad in
itself— a parallel to the loss in S. Africa— but when it is taken into -consideration
that there'were no independent candidates in the field, no Socialists to upset the voting, but that the result is a distinct vic tory lor the Conservative party, they might well begin to look up and see what
is the matter. t , ■ Is it to be read thait the electors do- not ■
consider Mr. Eastwood’s eleven months to have been productive o f so much good to the town ns to ensure his return for another three years? He is just out of the first
four and ties with Ex-Coun. Parker below the winning point.
The first )|iiought 'that struck a good
many people after they lieard the names of the persons ^ommatedi, would probably not be that Coun. Robinson would head, the Libenal poll. But during^the last. fe\y days prior to the election, his value ap peared to cornel out more forcibly than be fore, and he became very popular, with the r^ult that he, along with the three Conser
vatives, was returned. There is no doubt the Conservative par
ty have worked hand for the return o f their candidates. . A great deal o f enthusiasm was shown at their meetings, and from the first the outlook has been distinctly good. On the other hand ■
■ the, Libenal meetings,
more especially ,the first one, and really the most important, were not successful,
neither have the parly worked tvith any en thusiasm.' In fact,-very little has been done in the way of oainvassing, while the Conser\-atives have thrown in all their ener
gies and weight to bring about the return o f their candidates.
'I'he result our
ers know, and we venture to think the Liberal Party will have been taught a, 1 ^ son which they require.
.The Socidist.
handbill came as a surprise packet to Con servatives and Liberals alike. On the with drawal o f their two candidates it tvas gener ally thought that the chances were in fa vour o f the return of tavo' Consert-atives and two Liberals. But a manifesto sup porting the. Conservative.s, and at the same time dealing a blow to Liberals was never expected, and it appears to have had its effects in its o\m quarters. It was generally thought that Mr. Weeks
would head the poll, nor can it be said to be otherwise in-regard to Mr. Blackburn’s position. Mr. Norcross is somewhere about where we supposed he wpuld be, while Mr. John South worth has, practical ly speaking, no one to blame but himself in being so low in the poll. H e was not over anxious to secure the honour o f being returned, owing to the pressure o f business which must necessarily be a.dded to in his own case by Mr. Robert Southworth’s de parture for South Africa. Altogether, it is now seen that tho Con
servatives at last are about to enjoy a simi larly long spell of power to that which has
just fallen away from the Liberal hands. What shall we see?
:o ! - THE MAYORALTY.
Although the actual election of- the Mayor for the ensuing year will not take place until the 9th, the appointment is now virtually' settled by the selection, at the .innual “ Cockle and
Mu.ssel Feast,” held last evening, of Alderriian Tillotsoii. Alderman Tillotson is to be congratu
lated upon attaining to the honour of the civic chair, though after by no means a very brief mun'icipal career. Not only- do we congratulate him on
receiving this appointment, but most sin cerely do we think the Old Borough is to consider itself highly fortunate in obtain ing persons to lead us in the conducting of the affairs of the town, of a stamp that, considering tlie way their own private af fairs are managed, are capable o f success
fully conducting the affairs of tlris coqxirate estate. With our retiring Mayor, Aider-
man Roberts, we have an insUuice of what aye moon by men of business, and who lyill have occ.'ision to grumble at the ruling of our retiring officer? We think no one. I''oIlowing in his wake we liave a gentle man of somewhat similar character in the person of Alderman Tillotson. Most decidedly this is a good sign, for
does it not stand to reason .that men who are able to conduct and bring, to a suc cessful issue their own: transactions, are
likely persons to h.ave excellent ideas for the carrying out of the business of a cor porate estate.
. ’ ,
His election is to be celebmited by- the annual dinner-ou the 9th instant.
From another portion of this issue will be
observed extracts from the County- .hl'edical Officer’s Report for the year ending Decem ber 31st, 1898, relat’lng to the Borough, and tlve^Rural Sanitaiy District. The vital statistics though not considered
so favouivvble as those of last year, yet they may certainly bo classed as fiurly satisfactory,
* ,
inasmuch as they are below the rates of , the urban districts m tlie County.
