Empire. I'lierc is no lack of rhiilis in "he screen

play, "The hidden message,” which was sub.stiluted for "The stolen treaty," ,i.t tlie Empire, hast nigJu. .■lii attractive girl em ployed’ in a porcelain factory, wishes to escape the unwelcome attentions of her guatditui, and encloses a me.-^sage in a vase offering lu marry anyone who w'll rescue her. A young millionaire becomes die pos- ses.sor of tire vase ;uid finding the message, determines to rescue the girl. Tlien follow e.xciting races in motor care, motor boats, and Inially, to escape the guardian, the cou[)le charter a balloon. Their pursuer, however, jxevails upon another balloonist lo give chase, but the latter’s craft catches tire in mid-air, and the guardian meets with a painful deadi. Of the other films, ftr.si place must be accorded “Diamond cut diamond." This is the most humorous John ilimny and Flora Finch picture we have had the good fortune to see, and it called forth roars of laugnter from last night’s audience. A drama of great interest is entiiled, “A factory, ^ r l ’s honour.” To defeat rhe machinations of an unscrupul ous manager, his employer’s neice secures work in the factory, and after a narrow escape of death by lire, she succeeds in ex- po.sing the manager. There are several other plcture.s of merit. “Trlio secret of the safe’’ and “The hvo

engine drivers’’ are the star pictures for next week, and both are described -as full of exxitement.

THE PALACE. “The Black Countess,” which takes the

foremost place among the pictures this week-end met witlr an excellent reception at tlie Palace Last night. Dealing chiefly willi the machinations of an adventuress who seeks to entliral a young medical stu dent, the film has a strong moral side, re vealing sucli maternal instincts for her sick child as to overcome weaknesses for false position and for the gratification of insensate appetite. The film is exquisitely coloured, and is admirably' acted th’rough- out. “The Palmetta hat industry” is an inter

esting educational film, and of the others, “Faitlrful unto deatli” has strong diamatlc interest, dealing with a Sepoy attack on a British outpost. A very successful turn is provided bv tlie

Singing Gypsies in a novel and striking sett ing, the caravan and illuminated stage ef fects being an attractive feature of the performance.
