with it. And I was like, ‘Yeah. I think that’s a good idea.’ And so we did that. And then the other thing that Mike would always say, like, in the beginning, I was walk ing, we had scenes where I was walk ing, like, when we got off the boat even in the beginning. And I k ind of just had a normal walk, you know, and I got out and I just would and we walked and he’d be like, ‘You don’t look rich! You don’t look rich!’ Like that.
He would yell from over the camera. And he’d walk up to me and he’d go, ‘You’ve got to walk richer! And I was like, ‘Okay’. He’s like, ‘Aren’t you rich in real life? Walk rich.’ And I was like, ‘Okay. Okay.’ And then so afterwards, I did it with the glasses on, and then I’d go like this just walk ing. And it was almost like the strut of a model, where he had this bounce to him and the shoulders were back. And Parker was so obsessed with that. She was always like, ‘What par t of his body does he lead with?’ And I was like, ‘That’s right.’
Or like at the breakfast, there was a really small par t where I just would sit like this and my family ’s talk ing, and I would just be flexing my pecs and watching myself and stuff. So he just let me do what I thought would be funny, and then, you know, other times he’d reel you in and say, ‘No, no, no – it’s too much.’ But I think the physicality and the wardrobe and the hair - every part makes a character.
He’s so interesting because he’s such a fascinating character on his own and then also in the context of his family. Was it important to mike that the five of you spend some time together so that that performance would feel very lived in? Yeah. This was such a unique project because I’m so used to on other things that I’ve done, you do table reads, you do some rehearsals
together and you have a lot of time
usually before you star t filming. This was like, you book the role, the press release goes out, and then two or three weeks later, you’re in Thailand. So it was very fast, and you didn’t know who else was in the show. You didn’t have the scripts yet. So, once we got there, we star ted to bond a lot as a family, and we did everything together. It’s one of those projects where
you’re know, 24 hours all in away on a 15-hour time
difference. You know, you don’t have much else to do in this foreign place that you’re so unfamiliar with that you just get really close with the people that are around you.
And so our family bonded a lot, and it was funny, like, two or three weeks into the show, Mike was like, ‘Hey. Do you want to get dinner tonight?’ And I was like,
‘ I can’t. I’m
getting dinner with my family.’ And he was like, ‘What, what, what - enough with you and the family. Stop hanging out. You guys don’t need to. It’s too much.’ And I was like, ‘ I’m trying to get used to them.’ But mostly, it was me, Sarah Catherine [Hook], and Sam [Nivola], the people that played my siblings. We got very close. We did everything together. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, every day for almost seven months and we’re so close now.
You do a good Mike White impression – can you do Parker Posey?
LIVE24-SEVEN.COM
I have to say, Parker is more like she gets really in the body, and has a Lorazepam voice, and it’s just [does the voice], ‘Tim, Tim, Piper. Nooo. Nooo.’ And the bottom of her mouth k ind of, like, goes to failure where it’s just k ind of like - you know? It’s just k ind of like, quivering, and it’s like, yeah. I don’t know.
That was good. the season was shot out of order - right? How is that for you as an actor, especially when your character goes on a specific journey, in a completely different emotional place from one scene to the next? Yeah. So my first day was episode one, getting out of the pool. The second day was episode eight, which was the finale of me walk ing over to Chelsea with her book, and she runs into Rick ’s arms. And I turn my head back, and I see her. Right?
Which is a great moment? It’s a beautiful moment. It’s a really beautiful moment. And it’s yeah, I feel like it’s, like, everywhere that moment, which is so funny because when we did the scene - and this is just a great example of how great and how impor tant it is to have a really great director and writer and stuff – was I thought about what you just said when I was filming that.
I was like, ‘Okay. This is the end. This is my last real scene, besides the Pina Coladas and some other stuff. But, it’s my last scene. Like, this is a great end of the arc moment. This is a moment that I should go, and I’m going to play with these girls, and I’m going to be super sweet and flir ty.’ And I did it the first take. And Mike came over and he was like, ‘You’re too nice. You’re being too nice.’ And he was like, ‘Maybe let’s just be
a little bit more, like, you
standoffish and like, just, like, you’re nice because you’re not saying one of your normal things, but don’t be too nice.
