Is there any truth in the story that the friendship group split up over a row about the film?
Tricia: “Sadly, yes. The girls didn't agree that it was Angela's decision to do the film, and that we had to tell a story but it had to be Angela's decision because it was her husband who had died. So half of them retired at the beginning of 2001 as a protest, thinking that it would stop the film. But of course it didn’t.”
What message do you hope your calendar leaves people with? Tracey:
“That we’re not trying to look younger but rather,
honouring the women we are today. Like many women, I’ve had moments of doubting myself and feeling the pressure of unrealistic expectations. It’s easy to focus on what we think needs fixing instead of recognising our worth as we are. My hope for this project is that standing in front of the camera builds confidence and self-esteem. At the same time, it shines a light on issues women face as well as raising those much-needed funds for the charities who support us throughout our lives.”
What are you most proud of looking back on this journey?
Tricia: “I am proud of our legacy and that these charity calendars are still being made. We have had so many calendars sent to us since. One of the most memorable being the mastectomy ladies, raising money for Breast Cancer and The Royal Marsden Hospital. And all kinds from butchers, fishermen and on horseback, you name it. - Some of them awful, some excellent, but all with
fundraising at their heart. I’m delighted to be attending the Ladies First Calendar launch and seeing their calendar for the first time.”
I know it’s all under wraps at the moment, but can you give any hints as to what your calendar is like?
Tracey: “I am super proud of all 38 ladies who joined me in the calendar. It is sassy, sophisticated and fun. I believe what makes it truly unique is the wonderful cross-section of women involved.
“We have 19-year-old twin sisters,mothers and daughters and an aunt and niece featured throughout the calendar. There are work colleagues, alongside women who met for the first time during the project.
“The laughter, camaraderie and sense of togetherness during the photoshoots were incredibly special. We were all united by the same mission: to support one another, celebrate women of all ages and backgrounds, and raise money for some very worthwhile causes. The friendships formed and the memories created along the way have made the experience even more meaningful, with each month telling a story!”
What advice do you have for the 2027 calendar cohort?
Tricia: “You have to just keep trusting in what you’re doing and keep sight of why you're doing it. Every calendar sold will make a difference. But what becomes quickly clear, is how it also makes a difference to the people taking part, not just the charities.”
