crisp croutons, there was plenty of texture alongside the tender fish. The salty capers and fresh lemon lifted the dish beautifully, while the croutons provided an enjoyable crunch. The Malabar fish curry brought considerably more spice to the table. Spice-roasted monkfish and king prawns were paired with fragrant coconut rice and crispy fried shallots. The curry had plenty of flavour without overwhelming the seafood, while the coconut rice provided a mellow, creamy contrast to the spices. The fried shallots added another layer of texture and a delicious savoury finish.
We shared two sides between us, burnt hispi cabbage with black garlic butter and green beans. The cabbage was a particular highlight, with the slight char bringing out its natural sweetness, beautifully enhanced by the rich, savoury black garlic butter. The green beans provided a fresher, lighter accompaniment and helped balance the richness of the other dishes.
And then came dessert, perhaps the hardest decision of the meal. The chocolate fondant was everything you would hope for, rich, decadent and gloriously chocolatey, served with honeycomb ice cream, chocolate sauce, honey and a pepper tuile. The combination of warm chocolate, cool ice cream, sweet honeycomb and the subtle peppery note made this a wonderfully indulgent finale.
The Callebaut dark chocolate mousse with chocolate shards was equally tempting. Silky and intensely chocolatey, it was beautifully finished with crisp chocolate shards, adding just the right amount of texture to the smooth mousse.
Overall, The Quill & Scholar delivered a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience, with a menu that manages to combine familiar favourites with dishes that offer something a little more adventurous. From the perfectly balanced starters to the
beautifully presented seafood mains and seriously tempting desserts, there was plenty to enjoy.
With its welcoming atmosphere, characterful setting and seasonal approach to food, The Quill & Scholar is well worth a visit when you’re in Lichfield, whether you’re popping in for a leisurely lunch, meeting friends for dinner or looking for somewhere to enjoy a relaxed meal after exploring the city.
