THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE A PLANT-FILLED COTSWOLDS NEWCOMER
112
Television Horticulturist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, celebrates the new year by introducing us to a plant-filled Cotswolds newcomer.
Happy New Year, I’m sure you’re reading this refreshed and full of vigour for 2026! Either that, or you’re slightly down- heartened to see the Nordmann Fir nodding its branches as they brown and await collection, or harassed by hoovering up the needles of the Norway Spruce as they refuse to leave your home. Fear not, there’s a brand-new nursery in town to lift your post-Christmas spirits! (Well outside of the town to be precise, in a charming village, not far from Evesham).
May I have the pleasure of introducing you to Roots Plants, recently relocated to our part of the world from Southampton and busy boxing up botanical beauties as we speak, under the helm of Gloucestershire based CEO, Alex.
The vale of Evesham has always been at the heart of plant growing. Its produce, whether plums or asparagus, being revered countrywide. It was also here that I, aged 18, first took my safety booted steps into horticulture, spending four years studying at the acclaimed Pershore College. The Vale’s microclimate is famously mild: sheltered by the Cotswolds, it gets fewer late frosts, warmer springs and a longer growing season than much of the UK and It’s one of the few places in Britain where soil, shelter and sunshine line up so consistently – which is why the area earned its reputation as the country’s natural orchard. So, what better base for one of our most progressive green fingered firms to find its forever home?

Having previously sourced plants from traditional growers - whose focus was on selling plants in garden centres - Roots wanted to build a nursery specifically for the realities of online plant buying. “Many traditional nurseries grow for garden centres, plants that look their best on the day, can be wheeled around on trolleys, and are chosen for instant, cosmetic appeal” says Roots. “ Without these constraints, growing for online customers allows a far better standard of plant: consistency, robustness and plants that establish quickly once they reach the garden. The new Roots nursery has been designed from the ground up. Plants are spaced wider so they develop stronger root systems and better branching, whilst watering and nutrition are tailored for long-term health rather than short-term display”.
