Sophie’s story begins when she’s eight years old living with her mother (who is a publisher) and her father who is a soldier in Afghanistan. One evening Sophie gets in a fight with her mother and tells her she hates her. The next morning her mother has vanished. Weeks later her father’s helicopter is shot down and he too is missing. For years Sophie is forced to live with her mean Aunt Rose. When she is 12 years old her father is rescued. Finally they are reunited but they are both traumatized. Her father starts a travel magazine which takes them to Salado, Texas. While he is checking into the Stagecoach Inn Sophie’s spots a strange little animal in the ancient tree in the courtyard. That night she and her new friend Presley climb the tree in pursuit of the tiny animal. Just when they think they’ve got him they fall. When they wake up they find themselves in prehistoric Texas with no way to getting back to their own time. Because Sophie never gives up on finding her mother, she and Presley climb the tree
again. But this time when they fall the end up in the Wild West where they meet a variety of authentic western characters, some good and some bad.
