Tomatoes

Tomatoes never taste better than when you eat them fresh and sun-warmed from your own plants. A favourite ingredient in salads, sandwiches and pasta sauces, they’re easy to grow in greenhouses or simply in pots on a sunny balcony or patio.

Tomatoes need a long, warm growing season. Sow them indoors in mid-spring (or early spring for greenhouse varieties) in a heated propagator or in pots placed on a sunny windowsill. They germinate easily, so don’t sow many more than you need. Grow them on until late spring, then harden them off and plant out. Water and feed regularly – they’ll be ready to harvest from mid-summer.

NEW

Sow under cover in the

warm from late February to early April. Fill a seed

tray with compost, water well and sow 3-4 seeds on the surface, cover with

vermiculite. Keep at around 18 degrees and seeds will germinate within 14 days. Move to a well lit area and ventilate.

Tomatoes can be grown inside or outside given warmth and protection.

Choose from the traditional vining or bush habits across all the different types. Tomatoes love plenty of

water and a fertile soil so digging in lots of organic matter is recommended ahead of planting out.

Tomatoes grown in a

greenhouse should be ready towards the end of June. Outdoor-grown tomatoes will be ready towards the

end of July. To test ripeness, check colour and squeeze gently - ripe fruit is tender but not soft.

Choosing your tomatoes Tomato plants are grouped into cordon and bush types

(also sometimes called indeterminate and determinate types), and a range of different shapes and sizes.

Cordon Bush Cherry

Great for snacks and lunchboxes.

Cordon type

tomatoes grow tall and upright, producing a

single main stem with sideshoots growing from it.

Bush tomatoes, as the name suggests, grow into low bushes with many

sideshoots. These are often great for smaller spaces.

Salad Medium-sized,

round and very versatile.

Plum

Oval in shape with few seeds, ideal for cooking.

Beefsteak

Prized for their juiciness and flavour.
