Flower Seeds A-Z
Sweet Peas – Raised By Unwins
Few things smell sweeter than sweet peas in summer. The colours are incredible, the flowers are fantastic for cutting, and the more you pick, the more they flower! These stunning annuals look gorgeous trained up obelisks or over arches. If you’re short on space, you can even grow dwarf sweet peas in pots.
Sow sweet pea seeds indoors in autumn or spring. They have long roots, so do best in long root-trainer modules. To aid germination, nick the hard seed coat with a sharp knife or soak the seeds overnight before sowing. Plant them out after all risk of frost is past.

Sweet peas do well in a well-drained soil in full sun. Dig in plenty of garden compost or well-
rotted manure to improve drainage.
Sow from autumn to
spring in 9cm pots (2-3 seeds per pot) or root
trainers (1 seed). Sow 1cm deep, then water and cover with clear plastic bags to create humidity.
Once germinated, remove the bags and place pots in a cool, frost-free place to grow on until ready to plant out.
Plant out seedlings from
late May in fertile soil in full sun. Harden off plants for a few days before planting out by placing them outside during the day and bringing them back inside at night.
