irports, airlines, service companies and cargo handlers are all moving to make their operations and GSE fleets greener and more environmentally friendly. But converting to electric operations can be costly, with significant expense for infrastructure upgrades. Fortunately, there is help available to minimise those upgrade costs. JBT has developed PowerShare. PowerShare is a device that intelligently shares excess power, available at the gate boarding bridge or 400 Hz ground power units, with battery chargers needed to keep your electric GSE moving. And, with PowerShare, many of the costly infrastructure upgrades – such as utility enhancements, excavation, long cable runs and trenching – can be minimised or avoided altogether.
How it works
Installing PowerShare is a breeze: little or no new infrastructure, excavation or upgrades are needed; it utilises existing power feeds. As a result, there are fewer operational delays and minimal expenses – paving the way toward a greener GSE fleet. PowerShare uses excess power available at the boarding bridge or 400Hz power disconnects. This excess power is intelligently shared with battery chargers that can now be located close to the gate where the GSE equipment is used and parked. PowerShare is not a battery charger, rather it supplies chargers with power that already exists at the aircraft gate and does so in a manner that keeps gate equipment operating at peak levels of performance while ensuring the timely charging of electric GSE. With extensive metering and monitoring capabilities, PowerShare tracks battery charger use and battery health. It takes active measurements of system operation, anticipates power draw changes and

continually maximises battery charging given available power. It also maintains a history of component performance, keeps record of detailed system feedback and can display the information via the controlling HMI. The unit is ready for JBT’s iOPS telematics capability, where it collects and transmits the data to laptops and mobile devices. PowerShare keeps the gate equipment operating at the capacity needed to service the aircraft without shutting down the battery charger during charging operations. Gate equipment works at optimal levels, electric GSE is kept charged and battery life preserved. PowerShare provides a battery health check by keeping track of time spent charging, temperature, capacity, cell number and serial number. The surplus gate power is shared with battery charging devices, which protects the GSE, the charger and gate operations. PowerShare presents charger messaging in plain text and trends two hours of continuous data. It has remote monitoring capabilities and self-configures for different voltages and currents.
PowerShare uses the gate equipment feeds and takes advantage of surplus power at the boarding bridge. It’s brilliantly made to regulate extra power between gate equipment and battery chargers while integrating with telematics systems. With PowerShare it is easy to locate battery chargers where they can do the most good, most effectively, near the rotunda of the boarding bridge. With minimal cable runs, no utility upgrades and little or no excavation, your battery chargers can be energised and placed right where they are needed – where the GSE is used and parked. This not only saves on the cost of going electric, but also saves on operational costs reducing transit times and the power drain associated with driving electric GSE to remotely located battery charging stations.
