IN PARTNERSHIP
and most importantly, Cryoniss’ culture, are founded on this continual improvement philosophy. “People are the greatest asset of any company”,
says Houghton. “While Phil and I developed an excellent starting point, it is only through engaging with our customers, suppliers and regulatory bodies – alongside our own internal feedback systems – that our team can own and develop future improvements.”
Potential impact While a focus on continual improvement is important, any potential changes must be considered based on their impact, resourcing, and potential for affecting other internal and external processes. Cryoniss has a triage process to review ideas and assign outcomes of ‘just do it’, or a champion is assigned to investigate further using define, measure, improve, analyse and control processes. Other ideas are simply parked for future consideration. Houghton explains that every November the
whole team partakes in a ‘Kaizen’ event, to review all processes with a headspace to think creatively. On this occasion, the Lean Six Sigma toolkit is used to its full capacity, with team members taken through the principles of Lean Six Sigma. For Cryoniss, 2020 has been quite the
year. Headquartered at Alderley Park, along with their world-class vapour phase liquid nitrogen
facility, the team opened their second facility at The Heath Business and Technical Park, for storage of samples from +4°C to -80°C, the week before lockdown. “The facility was fully operational”
says Houghton, “and with two independent laboratory monitoring systems – together with a watchdog functionality, storage units cleaned and serviced, UKAS-validated temperature- mapping and full end-to-end validation in place – alongside a fully stress-tested business continuity management system, we were ready for a well-earned opening party.” “Sadly, the physical celebrations have been put
on hold,” explains Houghton. “However, I am proud that we have been able consistently support next- day dispatch and collection of samples throughout lockdown, alongside supporting customers with ad hoc requests, such as setting up a new lab with regulatory licences and logistics support, enabling them to continue trading.” “I am really pleased how our Kaizen/common sense philosophy has steered us well through the pandemic,” Houghton concludes. “It is a real testament to our amazing team and our network of partners that we have excelled at supporting our customers to focus on what they do best – exceptional science. ●
