Exploring collaboration, fragmentation, innovation

Name: Sibos Location: Toronto Date: 18-21 September Web: www.sibos.com Report: Review

Sibos was hosted in September by the Canadian city of Toronto, and took ‘collaborative finance in a fragmented world’ as its theme.

his September, Sibos took place in Toronto. Bringing together key leaders from across global finance, attendees gathered to explore an appropriately sweeping theme: ‘collaborative finance in a fragmented world’. Discussing everything from frictionless transactions to financial crime, the event was testament both to the power of partnership in modern banking – and the dangers when those partnerships break down. Future Banking, a partner at this year’s Sibos conference, explores. For more than 40 years, Sibos has been one of the landmark events of the global financial calendar. Starting in 1978, as a banking operations seminar, the Swift-

organised conference has grown into a major business forum. Now in its 45th year, it’s a place where stakeholders from across the sector can debate and partner on topics as varied as securities and cash management. Given the geopolitical earthquakes we’ve all faced over recent years, it’s perhaps unsurprising that this year’s Sibos, hosted in September by the Canadian city of Toronto, should have taken ‘collaborative finance in a fragmented world’ as its thesis. And if the fragmentation was certainly on

display, much of Sibos was devoted to the vast potential of collaboration – both for financial institutions and their customers.

Payment potential

Nowhere was this clearer than the question of payments. Continuing to dominate global banking, it’s an international industry now worth more than $2tn. It makes sense, therefore, that so much of the 2023 Sibos event was dominated by payments – and making them simpler. As attendees pointed out, low-value cross- border payment volumes continue to rise, with financial institutions around the world evolving their offerings to meet the new demands of customer experience. Customers, for their part, now expect the same experience that would be received when sending domestic payments.
