Efficient cold storage: curbing £35bn losses

Highlighting the crucial role of cold storage efficiency in pharma logistics, Mark Ross, global brand manager of ArcticStore Cold Stores – a TITAN Containers company – illuminates the transformative impact of portable, modular cold storage solutions on mitigating losses and elevating pharmaceutical outcomes.

T

he healthcare industry has a multitude of critical components – some more visible than others. Among the many parts of the web that exist ‘in the background’ is cold storage. An essential part of the pharma logistics cold chain, reliable cold storage solutions underpin the safe provision of untold numbers of treatment solutions, biologics especially. These, as the FDA notes, “tend to be heat-sensitive and susceptible to microbial contamination”. To provide biologics and other temperature-sensitive products to the healthcare industry, manufacturers of biologics, vaccines and microfluidic point-of-care (POC) equipment face significant challenges.

As well as being reliant on flawless temperature control and the ability to categorically prove that a product has been maintained at the correct temperature throughout its life cycle, biologics manufacturers also need to consider everything from the safety and security of the product to the challenges presented by international transportation, sometimes to remote areas.

When the cold chain breaks down, so does the safe provision of the product.

How cold storage helps the pharmaceuticals sector to flourish Traditional cold storage warehouses are inflexible. They can’t readily adapt to meet sudden spikes in demand, such as the Covid-19 vaccine. Cold storage solutions also need to be quickly deployed in times of natural disaster, when large volumes of blood products may be needed at a specific location. Pharma-ready containerised cold storage units such as the industry-leading ArcticStore use proven technology that has demonstrated its reliability over many

years. In many cases, containers also escape the onerous legislative issues and capex inherent with permanent structures. Containers can quickly be operational not just in times of emergency but as semi-permanent solutions at healthcare centres, where their modular nature allows for easy upscaling/downscaling as needed. TITAN’s modular structures that combine multiple containers are named Arctic SuperStores, and, to date, individual installations measuring as large as 800m2 have been created. One model in particular draws the eye of clients in the healthcare sector: the ArcticBlast. This powerful blast freezer has multiple individual coolers, ensuring backup in the unlikely event of the mechanical failure of any single cooling unit.

100 healthcare clients and growing TITAN Containers counts more than 100 global healthcare businesses as clients, Sonoco ThermoSafe among them. One recent project required the provision of ArcticStores for the freezing and ‘tempering’ of ThermoSafe’s unique Orion

parcel rental packaging programme, in which the thermal packaging is reused many times, reducing landfill. Andrew Heholt, Orion product manager, Sonoco ThermoSafe, said: “TITAN containers are an effective plug-and-play solution when refrigeration and temperature control equipment is needed. The modularity allows Sonoco to scale up or down with demand. The refrigeration control is precise and repeatable for Sonoco’s pharma cold chain JIT (just-in- time) packaging systems.”

This use case highlights one of the many different ways in which cold storage containers help minimise inefficiencies and losses in the sector.

The ArcticStore containerised cold storage collection includes models from 10ft to 40ft and can maintain temperatures from -75°C to 80°C. Latest-generation insulation tech helps minimise heat loss, and all units can be controlled and monitored remotely, 24/7, using the SmartArctic platform. ●
