The availability of medical care worldwide is a key metric tracked by the WHO, as it has a bearing on mortality rates and on the viability of Universal Health Coverage – an important pillar in the organisation’s plight to increase health security. Sparsity of data and a lack of mechanisms for tracking progress in some regions make it difficult to compile a full picture of healthcare staffing levels, but the numbers below from the ‘WHO World Health Statistics 2023’ report give some insight into personnel shortages in different parts of the world.
