PREVIOUSLY… IN TTJ
Delving into the TTJ archive, we look back at some of the issues and news affecting the timber trade in previous decades
2011
JAMES LATHAM CLOSE TO COMPLETING DLH UK ASSET BUY James Latham plc has confirmed to TTJ that it is “in the advanced stages of negotiation” on the possible acquisition of hardwood supplier DLH UK.
The Danish DLH group (Dalhoff Larsen & Hornemann A/S) announced at the end of December 2010 that it was winding down its UK sales arm as part of an international rationalisation and restructure.
Timber and sheet material importer and distributor Lathams, which was the latter’s largest customer, made a stock exchange announcement in early February declaring that it was in talks to buy the business. It now says that the completion of negotiations is now “imminent”.
“Once the deal has been concluded, [we] will make a further announcement detailing how the DLH UK Ltd business will operate going forward,” said the company. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, the acquisition is expected to be at net asset value, minus provisions. It said goodwill won’t be included and reported DLH UK to have gross assets of around £6m.
Lathams reported profits after tax of £3.4m on revenue of £66m for the six months to the end of September 2010.
PDT LAUNCHES MARKETING DRIVE More aggressive and professional marketing of its services nationwide can be expected from Powell Duffryn Timber Ltd following a restructuring of operations which will enable its six divisions to offer national availability and local service. From March 1, marketing operations have been run under a new PDT logo style with each division being renamed to give a better sense of corporate identity. PDT’s operating companies are now to be known as PDT Bayley Bartlett; PDT Hulmes; PDT Lloyd; PDT Palgrave- Brown; PDT Tagarts; and PDT Buildings.

FORESTS FOREVER’S TRADE APPROVAL
1991
The Forests Forever campaign is on the right track, but could improve, according to trade members polled in a TTJ survey. A handful of the 200-plus contributing companies to the campaign were contacted by TTJ, and most approved of Forest Forever’s efforts. All such respondents said they would be donating again.
“Within their constraints, they do a sterling job,” said David McKee, director of SH Montgomery Ltd. However, some felt that “the campaign is preaching to the converted. It’s the man in the street we should be talking to.”
ARNOLD LAVER UNVEILS £7M PLAN
2001
The Arnold Laver Group plans to create a state-of-the-art national production centre in Sheffield.
The group has revealed further details of its £7m investment to turn a massive eyesore site on the outskirts of Sheffield into the new headquarters of Arnold Laver Timber World. It will service the group’s growing network of depots across the UK. The site, at Halfway, will incorporate a call collect centre, a design engineering production facility, a
machined profile production centre, a
sheet material processing unit and a treatment plant.
