ADVANCING TUNNELS
Seasons come in nature, and all things, perhaps. Infrastructure, too. Economic waves rise and fall,
bringing with those seasons the tides of capital and debt finance as they ebb and flow to give more or lessening the support for desired infrastructure projects. Projects, then, come to start and
finish, to progress within their own, micro-seasons, relatively. These stages range from early ideas to feasibility studies and on to designs; from procurement and awards to breaking ground and getting underground to construct shafts and tunnels; and on, further, to finishes and fanfares, and tallying of the costs; and, then, the long years of operations - accompanied by maintenance and upkeep. While the focus on underground
infrastructure is so often on the most interesting and intriguing challenges of constructing tunnels of varying sizes in different geologies, the reality is that this stage is only but a part of the long life of such an asset. In this issue of T&TNA, we take
the opportunity to catch up with a host of tunnel projects either getting underway or approaching
completion in a number of countries - in the US, Canada, Brazil, Chile, Panama and also beyond the Americas, such as in the UK, Germany and Sweden. We also take not of technical
developments, such as: the latest international guidance of high pressure compressed air working in tunnels; and, capturing an overview of how and where different Rock Mass Classification systems have developed, are used, and their inter-relationships. Ahead, as ever, the industry will
have much to discuss that is of interest in both technical evolution and project development. Each fascinating fields, in their own, and when combined then the challenges compound - and also opportunities to create. Such are parts of the attraction of life in engineering worlds, and also bringing benefit to society. Roll on, then, for a new year with
the coming of fresh projects, current endeavors making progress, and those works well underway getting over the line.
