West Fraser reports easing of demand

West Fraser reported further easing of demand for wood- based building products in Q2, 2025, with adjusted EBITDA more than halving compared to Q1. Adjusted EBITDA was US$84m (Q1 2025: US$195m), representing 6% of sales. The company’s Q2 sales totalled US$1.532bn.

The North America engineered wood products division recorded adjusted EBITDA of US$68m, while the Europe EWP segment posted adjusted EBITDA of US$2m. “Demand for many of our

wood-based building products slowed in the second quarter as spring building activity fell short of our expectations,” said Sean McLaren, West Fraser’s president and CEO. “This was more acute in our NA EWP segment, which experienced further easing of demand as the quarter progressed, consistent with government data pointing to softer US new home construction.” He said the company

would keep strong focus on

controlling costs and evaluate mill investments that upgrade the group’s portfolio and generate returns. West Fraser said a number

of factors are expected to drive demand for lumber, OSB and engineered wood panel products in the medium term, including improved housing affordability from the stabilisation of inflation and interest rates, a large cohort of the population entering the typical home buying stage, and an aging US housing stock.

The company referenced the seasonally adjusted annualised rate of US housing starts at 1.32 million units in June 2025, with permits issued for 1.40 million units, according to the US Census Bureau. “In Europe and the UK, we expect challenging industry demand to persist over the near term. In the longer term, we continue to expect demand for our European products will grow as use of OSB as an alternative to plywood grows,” it added.

The industrial-scale fibreboard recycling plant – Osiris 2.0 – succeeds Unilin’s Osiris 1.0 industrial pilot installation at its MDF plant in Bazeilles, France. The new plant will boost Unilin’s fibreboard recycling capacity from 1 to 10 tonnes per hour and will be able to process post-consumer MDF material. Dieffenbacher’s scope of

supply for Unilin includes the fibre transport and storage system, fibre sifters, glue preparation and dosing, PROjet glue-saving system, pneumatic systems and an emission control system. The steam explosion

vessel for the re-fibering process was newly designed by Dieffenbacher Energy in Bludenz, Austria, and optimised for fibreboard recycling. Dieffenbacher is also responsible for the steel construction, transport and conveyor systems, and the plant’s electrics and automation.
