World’s first battery management as a service offering


Brill Power has launched the world’s first battery management as a service (BMaaS) offering to maximise the performance of battery storage systems. It links to Brill Power’s battery intelligence platform under a unified interface, presenting what are called ‘transformative results’ over the lifetime of battery systems. Incorporating BrillCore


(hardware), BrillOS (firmware) and BrillAnalytics (cloud-based analytics), BMaaS is intended to enable battery integrators and owners to extract all the energy from systems over their lifetime, significantly improving the return on investment. Users will also have access to Brill Power’s latest BMS+ power conversion product, BESA BP6X1, for significantly lower upfront investment than the cost of a conventional BMS and claiming


the capability to extend battery life by up to 27%, increase utilisation by up to 71%, continuously balance modules for improved utilisation and improve uptime & safety thanks to its module- level redundancy.


Under the BMaaS model, partners will pay a recurring monthly fee to access BrillAnalytics and to aid optimal performance the Brill data science team will develop ‘state of the art’ SoX algorithms for partners and customers to ensure all energy can be used through operation. Once batteries are in service, customers will have access to real-time performance of systems, including predictive analysis, via BrillAnalytics and to remote monitoring and diagnostics.


In addition, through BrillAnalytics, BMaaS partners will be provided with insights into degradation rates of modules, racks and systems as well as estimated Remaining Useful Life, calculated using a combination of physical and empirical modelling.


Japan’s first SF6-free 300 kV circuit breakers ordered


Hitachi Energy has received an order for five units of its sulphur hexafluoride-free EconiQ 300 kV circuit-breaker from Chubu Electric Power Grid. This is the first project in Japan where SF6-free circuit breakers will be installed at voltages of 275 kV and above. It is considered a milestone in achieving sustainable power grids in Japan, and in Chubu Electric Power Grid’s ambition of reducing emissions to zero by 2050. The SF6-free EconiQ circuit breaker reduces CO2


-equivalent emissions from the insulating gas by 99.3 %. SF6 gas has excellent insulation and switching


performance and has been used for decades in power grids but it has a global warming potential 24 300 times higher than CO2


greenhouse gas emissions. and remains in the


atmosphere for more than 1000 years if it leaks from equipment. Governments around the globe are working on regulations to phase out the installation of new SF6 gas equipment to address climate change, but no such regulations exist yet in Japan. But with Japan’s electricity demand expected to increase due to electrification and the expansion of data centres, it becomes crucial to strengthen the power grids while reducing


In 2022, Chubu Electric Power Grid announced a policy to adopt SF6-free circuit breakers up to 77 kV when replacement was needed Now Chubu has announced a progressive policy to accelerate its decarbonisation initiatives by adopting SF6-free circuit breakers for 275 kV and above. Hitachi Energy launched EconiQ high-voltage products in 2021 and is progressively expanding its EconiQ high-voltage product lineup. It has to date developed SF6 gas-free products for grid- level voltages up to 550 kV.


Smart tensioning system developed


UK-based bolt tensioning expert TensionPro has developed a new semi-automated tensioning system with a digitally controlled pump unit connected to an electro hydraulic tensioning tool. The innovative Quantum Smart Tensioner delivers greater bolt tensioning control by providing the crucial data necessary for correct and accurate loading of critical bolts. The tool can be configured for use on OEM factory assembly lines, on or off–shore construction and installation, or for ongoing maintenance projects. The system is well suited to wind turbine generator applications, promoting speed, control and safety when working on the monopile to transition piece, foundation bolts, tower bolts, blade bolts and gearbox. The device features an electronically controlled


pump with digital LCD and integral PCB to control the pump, store preset programs, and record the crucial completed bolt tightening data. Presets specific to each bolt/application are pre- programmed into the system before use, so the entire tensioning procedure can be completed with the press of only three buttons located on the tensioning tool. This semi-automated process ensures repeatable and accurate loading of each bolt. The tensioner can be used with or without a ‘lift & move’ trolley depending upon application space and bolt sizes.
