WAPDA is spending Rs. 17.34 billion on the schemes relating to resettlement, environmental management and social development in the project area. About 3722 jobs, including 1945 for locals, have so far been created, which will increase to 8000 mark during peak construction period of the project.

OPG and Microsoft in strategic partnership Microsoft is to procure Clean Energy Credits (CECs) sourced from Ontario Power Generation’s carbon-free hydro and nuclear assets in Ontario under a new strategic partnership aimed at tackling climate change and driving sustainable growth across Ontario. The CEC’s. which will be procured on an hourly basis, will enable Microsoft to advance progress on its 100/100/0 by 2030 goal whereby Microsoft is committed to powering its datacentres globally with carbon-free energy, around the clock. OPG said that revenue raised through sale of CECs can be used to benefit ratepayers and support investments in new clean generation in the province, helping to meet increased demand for electricity to power Ontario’s economic growth. The two companies are also set collaborate


on several important sustainability initiatives, including:


Co-developing an hourly energy matching


platform that utilizes Microsoft Azure IoT and AI technology to match a customer’s power needs with local carbon-free energy sources, giving customers greater transparency and accuracy on their emissions impact. OPG has chosen Microsoft’s Azure as its cloud platform to modernize applications, IT infrastructure and services. By accelerating migration to the cloud and transforming business operations, OPG will also reduce its carbon footprint. OPG and Microsoft will explore digital co- innovation opportunities to accelerate OPG’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) program, with a goal of developing a service that other global energy providers can leverage in the future to deploy SMRs locally to fast-track clean energy solutions. Beyond the CEC agreement currently in


place, under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding, Microsoft and OPG will evaluate procurement of CECs associated with the carbon-free energy produced by the soon-to- be-constructed Small Modular Reactor (SMR) at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site. As part of the partnership, OPG has also joined the CEO Pledge, an initiative launched by Microsoft Canada, to commit its used technology to the Government of Canada’s Computers for Schools Plus (CSF+) program, with the goal of bridging the digital divide. The two companies will also roll-out a series of digital skilling initiatives to provide Indigenous


communities with tangible opportunities, including skills-building to increase economic and employment options. “This innovative partnership will not only spur economic development in Ontario, but also serve as a model for other companies and jurisdictions to encourage use of clean hydro and nuclear power,” said Ken Hartwick, OPG President and CEO. “As part of OPG’s Climate Change Plan, we committed to achieving net zero as a company by 2040, and to act as a catalyst for efficient economy-wide decarbonization. Ensuring industry has access to clean energy to offset emissions assists in meeting that goal.” “We can only address climate change by tackling the challenge collectively. Agreements like this one with OPG will help Microsoft move closer to achieving our sustainability commitments, including our goal of having 100 percent of our electricity consumption, 100 percent of the time, matched by zero carbon energy purchases by 2030,” added Chris Barry, President, Microsoft Canada. “Working closely with like-minded organizations like OPG, will help us move toward a more sustainable future, while continuing to power innovation in Ontario.”

GE wins 5-year maintenance contract at Belo Monte, Brazil GE Renewable Energy is to carry out scheduled, routine and corrective maintenance at the 11GW Belo Monte hydropower scheme in Brazil over the next five years after signing a contract with Norte Energia. The deal covers both Belo Monte and the complementary 233MW Pimental powerhouse. GE was previously selected to supply equipment and solutions for the construction and installation of the plants. The contract covers all maintenance work for a total of 24 power generation units. Eighteen of them are located at Belo Monte and another six are at Pimental, located just a few kilometers from the main Belo Monte hydropower plant. “GE’s experience in the maintenance of


large-scale assets, our digital technologies and services, and the fact that we are also a manufacturer put us in a unique position to add value on this important project. We were the only company that could combine the expertise in manufacturing the assets with a corresponding digital offering,” said Pascal Radue, CEO of GE Renewable Energy’s hydro division. “The five-year contract with Norte Energia for the maintenance of the Belo Monte project’s assets highlights, above all, our experience and knowledge in the operation and maintenance (O&M) of hydropower plants, acquired in more than 20 years as a provider of O&M services in Brazil.” The Belo Monte power plant is the largest


hydropower plant in Brazil and the fourth largest in the world. Ensuring the proper maintenance


of the Belo Monte project will help make the best use of its assets and resources to generate clean, affordable and reliable energy for millions of Brazilians. To execute the contract, GE Renewable Energy will assemble a team of professionals with expertise in mechanical, electrical, planning, health and safety, administration, and project management.


Brazil Voith to modernise Porto Colombia plant, Brazil In its first large-scale contract after privatization, Furnas has tasked Voith Hydro with modernisation of the 320MW Porto Colombia hydropower plant on the Grande River on the border between the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais in Brazil. The scope of work at the almost 50-year-old


plant includes the refurbishment of the Kaplan turbines, generators and the overhead crane. It also includes the replacement of mechanical and electrical auxiliary systems and digitization of measurement, protection and control systems will be covered. This will lead to an increase in availability of the Furnas system that supplies the National Interconnected Grid. “We are happy that we can contribute to this


project with our advanced technologies and solutions,” commented Ricardo Lee, Head of Modernization at Voith Hydro Latin America. “The customer will benefit from the local engineering team and factory in Brazil.” Voith Hydro has extensive experience in modernizing hydropower plants in Brazil. Earlier this year the company signed an agreement with a subsidiary of Eletrobras to modernize the Paulo Afonso II hydropower plant. Back in 2021, it has already began the modernization work for Paulo Afonso IV in the same hydroelectric power complex – the fourth largest plant in terms of installed capacity in Brazil which has been in operation since 1979. A couple of years before, the overhaul of four 355MW power units at the Salto Santiago hydropower plant on the Iguaçu River was completed. Voith Hydro also upgraded the Chavantes and Capivara power stations and increased their installed capacity. CTG Brasil, which holds the concessions of the plants, also contracted Voith Hydro to refurbish four generating units at their Ilha Solteira and Jupiá plants.
