Construction equipment | Digital solutions in action

Digitalisation continues to advance in the construction sector while a new podcast advocates for women in construction

ADVANCING DIGITALISATION IS ALLOWING services and solutions to become even more customised, consistent, and transparent, and Liebherr says its range of digital solutions and services for its machines can help to increase efficiency, performance, reliability, safety and comfort. In future, workshop managers will benefit from clearly displayed performance and maintenance data for their machines in the MyLiebherr portal. This data will also be made available for downstream processes such as maintenance planning and spare parts ordering. The MyAssistant for Earthmoving app will also provide machine operators with relevant information on the operation and maintenance of Liebherr machines.

MyAssistant has been developed to make access

to the company’s earthmoving and material handling product segments easier and more straightforward for customers, machine operators, and those interested in construction machinery. As well as comprehensive information for every target group, the app also offers existing and prospective customers the benefit of being able to make direct contact with Liebherr sales and service partners. Integration of the Liebherr Earthmoving Configurator within the app enables easy operation and means that users can conveniently create, save and manage the configuration of their desired machine via the app. The MyGuide for Earthmoving app can be downloaded now free of charge from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for smartphone and tablet mobile devices. It is initially available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France.

As digital transformation in the construction industry continues, construction sites are becoming increasingly digital and networked. Driver assistance systems such as machine control systems from Leica Geosystems can support machine operators in carrying out their activities by means of the latest technologies and real-time information. Leica Geosystems’ machine control systems are

already available in different versions for Liebherr mobile and crawler excavators. They include the 2D passive and 3D passive machine control system for Generation 6 and 8, as well as the 2D “3D-ready” semi- automatic and the 3D semi-automatic for Generation 6. Whereas with a passive system, machine operators

have to follow the indications on the display in the cab and operate the machine themselves to complete the job, the semi-automatic machine control system provides active support with a semi- automated removal mode. The machine operator controls the machine’s stick movements and speed via the joystick and the system automatically adjusts the correct movement of all the equipment to create the target profile. increased by using a semi-automatic machine control system. Work can also be carried out much more precisely over a longer period, reducing time- consuming and cost-intensive reworking. Machine control systems are becoming increasingly important for a wide variety of construction projects. They offer significant added value to machine operators, companies and the environment and enable the operators to use their machines even more productively and precisely. The consistent use of sensors and software provides the operator with real-time information, which in turn enables work processes to be optimised in terms of time and costs thanks to various automation functions. Waiting times for surveyors are shortened and the need for control measurements on the construction site is reduced. In addition, this increases safety on the construction site, as fewer people are needed in the direct vicinity of the machine and the operator’s workload is reduced, which prevents driver fatigue and associated susceptibility to errors.

Tales from the hook Tales from the Hook is the name of a podcast

sponsored by Liebherr and hosted by Katie Kelleher who started working as a lifting operator at 30 years of age and is now an advocate for women in construction. Kelleher said that she doesn’t want women and girls

to be held back by biases and misconceptions and that it’s important to sell the industry “way better than we did in the past by informing girls and women about the skills required and the options available”. “Furthermore,” Kelleher added, “we need visible

role models of all ages, races, sexes, and backgrounds to gain the experts we need for the future. A tip I would give to any girl, woman, or anyone looking to work in the industry is to do the research, so you are aware of the countless opportunities out there. Many companies offer apprenticeships and training – use the chance for making your own impressions.” In Tales from the Hook Kelleher tells stories about construction and discusses people’s experiences, apprenticeships and journeys in the industry. She’s spoken with those from all different areas in the industry, from current apprentices and former trainees who have worked their way up, to engineers who have become CEOs, while discussions have focused on mental health and how to inspire younger generations.
