Colombia Hydro plants refinanced in Colombia Holland & Knight has announced it advised Bancolombia S.A. as the lender in a refinancing of five hydroelectric power plants operated by Grupo LAREIF.
Grupo LAREIF currently operates eight power generation plants, all of them run-of-river hydroelectric power plants in the Department of Antioquia. These plants have been incorporated to the National Interconnected System (SIN) since July 2007. The five plants that obtained refinancing from Bancolombia are: Caruquia (Santa Rosa de Osos), Guanaquitas (Gómez Plata), Barroso (Salgar), Popal (Cocorná) and CH San Miguel (Cocorná). “We are pleased to have advised Bancolombia in this interesting transaction and to have worked hand in hand with Grupo LAREIF and its advisors,” said Holland & Knight Partner María Juliana Saa, who led the representation. The debt refinancing consisted of a new
credit facility for $275 billion pesos (approx. US$71.7 million) and the re-profiling of a leasing facility for $75 billion pesos (approx. US$19.5 million). The financing was closed on September 7. The Holland & Knight team advising Bancolombia was led by Ms. Saa and Partner Lucas Saffon-López with the active participation of Associate Alberto Mario Vergara.
Indonesia Toshiba to supply hydro turbines for Kerinci Merangin plant Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd. (THPC), a Chinese subsidiary of Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, and Indonesian subsidiary PT. Toshiba Asia Pacific Indonesia (TAPI), are to manufacture four 105MW hydro turbines for the Kerinci Merangin hydroelectric plant in Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Under the terms of the deal, awarded by Bukaka Group, THPC will work on the design and manufacturing of the hydro turbines at THPC’s operations in China, and TAPI will handle the dispatch of instructors for installation work on site, and offer online technical guidance so that the project can be carried out as planned without delays.. “I’m pleased that we received orders for
hydro turbines and associated equipment for the Kerinci Hydropower Plant in Indonesia,” said Shinya Fujitsuka, Director and Senior Vice President of the Power Systems Division at Toshiba ESS. “Toshiba ESS will continue to contribute to supplying highly reliable
equipment for hydropower plants all over the world in cooperation with local, reliable hubs in order to realize carbon-neutral electricity generation.” THPC has received orders for hydropower
plant equipment from the Bukaka Group continuously since 2016 for Indonesia’s four plants, including the Malea 1 Hydropower plant, which started commercial operation in July 2021.
Global Hydrogen and hydropower collaborate to tackle climate change The green hydrogen and sustainable hydropower sectors are set to collaborate to achieve net zero, with the newly formed Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2) and the International Hydropower Association (IHA) today setting out a mutually strengthening vision of how their two sectors can contribute to tackling climate change. The Green Hydrogen Organisation will
promote the production and use of green hydrogen. It has begun work on establishing a ‘GH2 Green Hydrogen Standard’ to ensure that green hydrogen is certified as coming only from low carbon sources. In addition to ensuring almost zero carbon emissions are produced by green hydrogen, the GH2 Green Hydrogen Standard will be developed to align with the hydropower sector’s Hydropower Sustainability Standard, making sure over time that wider ESG commitments are safeguarded. Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm
Turnbull will be inaugural Chair of the new organisation, with Dr Andrew Forrest, Chairman of Fortescue Metals Group and Fortescue Future Industries, a founding Board member. The commitment by the two organisations
to collaborate was made at a session on green hydrogen at the World Hydropower Congress on 17 September 2021. The main message of the session was that energy should be sourced only from renewable sources like sustainable hydropower.
“Sustainable hydropower and green
hydrogen is a perfect marriage. I look forward to working arm in arm with the green hydrogen sector to help its exponential growth built on good sustainability principles,” said Eddie Rich, CEO of IHA. “The green hydrogen revolution is dependent on renewable energy, including sustainable and responsibly developed hydropower. With the need for renewable energy and storage growing rapidly, it will be critically important for the green hydrogen industry to subscribe to high sustainability standards.” The founders of the new organisation
strongly endorsed the forthcoming San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower and the recently launched Hydropower Sustainability Standard.

India Teesta-V wins 2021 IHA Blue Planet Prize NHPC Limited’s Teesta-V hydropower project in India has been named the winner of the 2021 IHA Blue Planet Prize for excellence in sustainable hydropower development. The 510MW project located on the Teesta River in Sikkim, Northern India, was awarded the prize by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) after it met or exceeded international good practice across all 20 performance criteria using the Hydropower Sustainability Tools. “This is a proud moment for NHPC and will encourage and inspire us to achieve higher standards in sustainability for hydropower project development and operation,” commented Chairman and Managing Director Abhay Kumar Singh. “On behalf of NHPC Limited, I express our sincere gratitude to the International Hydropower Association for awarding the prestigious IHA Blue Planet Prize to NHPC’s Teesta-V Hydroelectric Power station.” The Teesta-V project met proven
international best practice in six topics, including project benefits, public health, cultural heritage, erosion and sedimentation, and asset reliability and efficiency. In addition, the project exceeded international good practice in nine topics and met basic good practice in the remainder. The independent assessment report highlights how NHPC Limited has designed and implemented processes to manage its impacts on local communities and the environment. In doing so, the project has provided significant positive benefits, including providing low-cost electricity and employment to the region. “We are delighted to award the 2021 IHA
Blue Planet Prize to NHPC Limited’s Teesta-V station,” said Eddie Rich, Chief Executive of IHA. “The project has demonstrated a real commitment to transparency and good practice, and can hopefully act as a model in the region. “No project is perfect and the path to sustainability can sometimes be bumpy, so we welcome NHPC Limited’s passion for sustainable development and encourage them to pursue this ambition beyond the recognition of the IHA Blue Planet Prize.” Teesta-V is part of a cascade of hydropower
projects along the Teesta River designed to supply power to Sikkim’s Energy & Power Department and other state-owned distribution companies in India’s eastern region. The sustainability assessment was conducted
by a team of independent accredited assessors using the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP) from January to June 2019. The prize was awarded by the IHA on 23
September 2021, the penultimate day of the biennial World Hydropower Congress.
