Dam safety in the spotlight


D


am safety is a critical aspect of infrastructure management that ensures the protection of lives, property, and the environment. Dams serve various purposes, including flood control, water supply, hydroelectric power


generation, and recreation. However, they also pose significant risks if not properly maintained and monitored.


One of the primary challenges in dam safety is the aging infrastructure. Many dams around the world were built decades ago and are approaching or exceeding their intended lifespan. This aging process can lead to structural deterioration, increased maintenance costs, and heightened risk of failure. Climate change presents another significant challenge to dam safety. The development of more sophisticated risk assessment methodologies presents another opportunity. By adopting a risk-based approach to dam safety management, authorities can prioritize
