Spotlight | Expanding capacity Preformed Windings’ new Sheffield facility signals growth in the hydropower industry
DECEMBER 2024 MARKED A major milestone for Preformed Windings, as the company officially opened its second manufacturing facility in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. This expansion is more than just a new building – it’s a significant step forward for a company that has become synonymous with quality and innovation in the production of high-voltage diamond coils. These coils are essential to the reliable operation of motors and generators, including those critical to hydropower applications worldwide. For over 55 years, Preformed Windings has built a solid
reputation, serving global markets with coils designed for maximum durability, performance, and efficiency. Known for their low Partial Discharge levels, optimal Tan Delta performance, and long service life, the company’s products are widely used by OEMs, end users, and service companies. These attributes make Preformed Windings a trusted supplier to an industry increasingly focused on sustainability and reliability. The opening of the new facility represents a 60%
increase in production capacity, allowing the company to better meet growing global demand as the hydropower industry continues to expand. The additional 11,000 square feet in the new unit, combined with the existing 19,000 square feet of manufacturing space, positions Preformed Windings to scale operations while maintaining its commitment to high quality.

brought together a diverse group of attendees, including industry leaders, government representatives, customers, suppliers, and key partners. The occasion was not just a celebration of a new facility but also a reflection of the strong partnerships and collaborative ethos that have propelled Preformed Windings forward. The festivities began with a networking dinner on the evening of December 5th at a nearby hotel. This gathering provided an opportunity for attendees to connect in an informal setting, strengthening relationships among stakeholders in the hydropower and manufacturing industries. The main event on December 6th started with a welcoming brunch, setting a warm and inviting tone for the day. Presentations by Preformed Windings CEO James Stevens and Pablo Valverde, Deputy CEO of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), highlighted the importance of the expansion. Both speakers underscored the role that increased manufacturing capacity will play in meeting the global demand for reliable renewable energy solutions. “Our new facility represents not just growth for
Preformed Windings, but an opportunity to better serve the global hydropower industry,” said Stevens. “We’re committed to delivering innovative solutions that help drive the renewable energy transition.” A highlight of the event was a series of guided tours, giving attendees an up-close look at the advanced

production processes that set Preformed Windings apart. Guests were taken through the company’s original facility, Unit C, as well as the new Unit J, observing firsthand the precision and expertise involved in high-voltage diamond coil manufacturing. These tours showcased not only the state-of-the-art machinery but also the dedication of the company’s skilled workforce, which has been central to its success. The day culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Jake Richards, MP for Rother Valley. Richards’ presence underscored the significance of the expansion for both the local economy and the UK’s manufacturing sector. The event concluded with attendees receiving commemorative keepsakes, a gesture of appreciation from Preformed Windings for their ongoing support.
Driving innovation and sustainability The addition of the second facility is part of a broader
strategy by Preformed Windings to stay at the forefront of technological innovation and sustainability. Significant investments in CAPEX, R&D, and workforce development have enabled the company to not only expand its capacity but also to push the boundaries of what’s possible in coil design and manufacturing. These efforts are particularly relevant to the
hydropower industry, where reliability and efficiency are critical. The company’s high-voltage diamond coils are designed to deliver consistent performance under demanding conditions, helping to reduce maintenance costs and extend the service life of hydropower generators. Preformed Windings also places a strong emphasis on sustainability. The company holds ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications, demonstrating its adherence to stringent quality and environmental standards. Initiatives such as staff upskilling, apprenticeships, and wellbeing programs reflect a commitment to social responsibility, while ESG champions within the company actively work to advance sustainability goals.
“Our focus on sustainability goes hand in hand with our mission to drive innovation,” said Stevens. “By investing in research, development, and our people, we’re ensuring that we remain a trusted partner for the hydropower sector and beyond.”
UK economy and hydropower growth As a predominantly export-oriented business, Preformed
Windings plays a significant role in bolstering the UK economy. The new Sheffield facility is expected to create jobs and strengthen the company’s global reputation, contributing to the UK’s standing as a hub for advanced manufacturing.
At the same time, the expansion reflects the broader
growth of the hydropower industry, which is increasingly recognized as a key component of the global renewable energy mix. By increasing its capacity and enhancing its capabilities, Preformed Windings is well-positioned to support the continued development of this vital sector.
