BURIED TREASURE
This month’s issue of Cranes Today brings a diverse selection of crane content comprising coverage of world records, company milestones, new crane models, company acquisitions and spectacular job site case studies. The lifting world records are outlined in the lattice boom crawler crane feature (p22); new crane models in news (p10); milestones and acquisitions feature prominently in the loader crane article (p14); and multiple jaw-dropping case studies can be found in the decommissioning article (p34). Beyond these eye-catching headline items, however, there
are other interesting bits of information buried within this issue which caught my attention (and are areas we will look to explore further in future issues). So what exactly am I talking about here? First, in the lattice boom crawler crane feature, Steve Sarens, Sarens’ managing director of technical solutions in the USA, reveals an industry first with the use of SPMTs as a ballast wagon for its Liebherr LR12500 – which will work on a major semiconductor plant project in North America. Although the SPMT/ballast wagon concept has previously
been explored by Sarens and Liebherr as far back as 2020 (on the LR 11000) it has not, until now, been used on such a large capacity crane in the field. The trials with the LR 11000 highlighted the need for the SPMT ballast wagon to be to be controlled from the crane cab and Sarens says the solution being used on the LR12500 allows for faster and more efficient work. It also means the ballast exerts much lower ground pressure than it otherwise would have. The second item of note, for me, is also to with Liebherr and it's regarding the launch of its 40 HC-L luffing jib crane (p10). With

this crane the company has, for the first time on a luffer, used aramid fibre rope for the guying setup. It has previously used fibre rope for hoisting but not for guying. It says the lightweight material reduces weight on the jib, resulting in a higher lifting capacity, plus it offers advantages for crane assembly/disassembly. It's these evolutions and refinements that fascinate me as, ultimately, this is how the industry progresses – step by step. Of course, there are plenty more nuggets of information that
may interest you throughout this issue, depending upon your particular area of interest, but I’ll leave you to discover these for yourself! I hope you enjoy this month's magazine.
