Delegates at a past BTS H&S course. The next two-day H&S course is over 17-18 November 2025, in London

The course also provides a great opportunity for

the students to network on a more informal basis, triggering the establishment of friendships across both corporate and national boundaries. These friendships often last well into the future, forging many a tale that becomes part of tunnelling folklore and ‘the craic’ that keeps tunnellers going when work is done, and socialising takes over. The inclusion in recent years of an evening social

for the delegates and presenters to meet and discuss tunnelling has been added to the two-day course. The delegate attendance at the BTS H&S course

ranges from between 60 and 90 delegates, which has included delegates travelling from abroad – Denmark, Hong Kong & India, to name only a few. For the 2025 course, the current programme topics

are:- ● Introduction from BTS Chair; ● An introduction to BS6164 & legislation; ● Nurturing a good Safety Culture; ● Critical role of Human Organisational Performance (HOP) and Human Factors in creating safer, more efficient workplaces;

● Technical and practical aspects of design – Readiness reviews, spray trials, trial assemblies;

● Ground Risks - Identification and Mitigation; ● Health & Welfare - HAVS, MSD, noise, dust, heat, chemicals, gas exposure; ● Risk Management;

● Confined Spaces -Tunnel & Shaft Entry / Atmospheric Monitoring;

● Underground Machinery - TBMs, Locos & Rolling Stock, Conveyors, their Management & Maintenance;

● Ventilation for tunnels under construction – Include welfare/management of dust;

● Health & Safety in Shaft Sinking – Broadened subject to cover site layouts/walkways/safety equipment;

● SCL – Management of safety during construction; ● Emergency Response Management - Response planning, Controls, Equipment, Organisation; Procedures and Training;

● Compressed Air - Usage - Effects & other hazards; ● Mental Health Wellbeing in Construction; ● Case Study in Failure.

The course has been a large benefit to developing the improved Health and Safety in the tunnelling industry, so talk to those who have attended and promote the emerging tunnellers to attend the course.
