UNDERGROUND FUTURES


Some decades ago, infrastructure spend was found ripe to be readily chopped when ill economic wind would trouble politicians. The projects make have taken time to develop and then design and build but the axe fell in an instant. Thus, stop-start shakes to the construction industry, and all it in turn supports. Then the money markets and


privatisation of sectors, and entities, came to pass and thus funding flows became more available. Projects could proceed, the construction industry could grow, if still taking time, naturally. Construction may seem slow


compared to other sectors, like ‘technology’ - i.e., the term effectively usurped by the speedy computer-based industries, and no longer affording an understanding that technology, in the widest sense, covers much more, including infrastructure construction. The construction sector may seem


behind the curve, then, especially in the era of accelerating artificial intelligence (AI). But a funny thing happened on the way to the future. With the wires and bots coming for repeatable, standardised


systems and jobs, there is growing realisation that large- scale construction is anything but such; in fact, niches within it are especially not so - such as underground environments, where blueprints smack up against geology. Down there, the smarts of tunnellers carry the day. In terms of future-proofing


employment, therefore, it may be that tunnelling is not way behind the curve in the race with technology but is, in fact, more resilient…and dare we wonder, ahead of the curve, in human terms? So, as long as politicians do


not assess societal demand as evaporating and swing the axe to budgets - the best place could be underground. There is much then to push


ahead for and learn about tunnels. In this issue it is our pleasure to present a variety of such insights - news, a Client’s perspective (HS2), design guidance (SCL), lining systems (‘Wurm’), and trenchless technology and boom-time.
